Police Identify Suspect in Manchester Synagogue Attack, Two Dead
A tragic incident unfolded outside the Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester on the morning of September 24, 2023, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries. Armed officers fatally shot the suspect, identified as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, following a violent attack that involved both a vehicle and a knife.
The attack began around 09:30 local time when Al-Shamie drove a vehicle into a crowd of pedestrians. Following the collision, he exited the car and initiated a knife assault. Emergency services quickly responded, but two men lost their lives at the scene. Three additional individuals were hospitalized with serious injuries, including one who sustained a stab wound and another who was struck by the vehicle.
In a statement released on the evening of September 24, officials from Counter Terror Policing confirmed the identity of the suspect, noting that formal identification was still pending. They also disclosed that three other suspects, including two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s, have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in acts of terrorism.
Details of the Attack and Response
The assault occurred during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, while a significant number of worshippers were present at the synagogue. Fortunately, security personnel and congregants managed to prevent Al-Shamie from entering the building. Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Stephen Watson reported that officers neutralized the threat within seven minutes of receiving the initial emergency call, emphasizing the rapid and effective response of law enforcement.
The police cordoned off areas surrounding the synagogue, including White House Avenue and Langley Crescent in Prestwich, as investigations continued. A bomb disposal team was dispatched due to reports that the attacker appeared to be wearing an explosive vest; however, it was later confirmed that the device was not operational.
Community Impact and Official Responses
Local leaders have expressed their shock and condolences in the aftermath of the attack. Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham stated that the incident has left a “deep mark” on the community. He thanked Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, for her visit to Manchester to provide reassurance to residents. Mahmood expressed her horror at the “antisemitic terrorist attack” and offered her prayers to the victims and their families.
In light of this tragedy, the UK government has increased security measures at synagogues across the country, committing to safeguarding the Jewish community. “We will do whatever is required to keep our Jewish community safe,” Mahmood affirmed during a press conference.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to uncover the motivations behind the attack and to support the families of the victims.
