Plans Unveiled for New Medical Centre to Serve 15,000 Patients
Plans have been announced for a new medical centre in Peterborough, aimed at accommodating a growing patient base. The proposed facility will replace the existing Hampton Medical Centre, which currently operates from a unit in the Serpentine Green shopping centre. Due to its limited space and the increasing local population, the current facility is considered no longer fit for purpose.
On October 2, 2023, a planning application was submitted to the Peterborough City Council for a purpose-built medical centre at Silver Hill. This new facility will serve as the base for Hampton Medical Centre, which is expanding its services to meet rising demand. According to the planning documents, “The practice is expanding and recruiting more clinical staff to meet the growing demand. The new facility will accommodate more clinicians which will enable the practice to provide more appointments, a wider range of services, and offer more patient registrations.”
Two-Phase Development Plan
The development is set to unfold in two phases. The first phase will include a new medical facility, parking, landscaping, and associated infrastructure. The second phase will feature residential accommodation specifically for medical students training with the practice.
Currently, the existing medical facility serves approximately 12,400 patients. The new centre is expected to increase this capacity to 15,000 patients upon completion of the first phase, with further growth anticipated after the second phase is finalized. The two-storey, flat-roofed building will encompass 2,100sqm of medical facilities and an additional 245sqm of residential space, providing six self-contained student studios.
A planning statement highlighted the benefits of this development, stating, “The development as a whole, and at each stage, will provide a purpose-built, multidisciplinary medical facility for Hampton, improving patient outcomes, integrating and streamlining services, enhancing efficiencies, providing training opportunities and improving overall patient experience resulting in a highly innovative model of care for local residents.”
Job Creation and Accessibility
The new medical centre is projected to create 40 full-time equivalent jobs. The design includes 44 parking spaces allocated for staff, patients, and visitors, ensuring adequate access for the community.
The Peterborough City Council planners will review the proposal and make a formal decision in the coming weeks. This initiative represents a significant investment in local healthcare, aiming to enhance the quality of medical services available to the residents of Hampton and surrounding areas.
