RSPCA Hull & East Riding CEO Responds to Criticism and Misunderstandings
The Chief Executive of RSPCA Hull & East Riding, Fred Owen, has addressed recent criticisms and personal attacks directed at the organization, particularly regarding its staff and volunteers. He emphasized that the team is deeply committed to animal welfare and feels hurt by allegations suggesting they do not care for animals.
In a statement released on social media, Owen clarified that the RSPCA operates under national policies and legal frameworks, which can sometimes limit their ability to respond to every situation. He stated, “We do not ‘refuse to help’. We operate under national RSPCA policy and the law,” explaining that the organization cannot take in every stray animal or intervene in hoarding cases without the proper legal authority.
Owen’s remarks came after a series of strong comments were made online, which he believes do not contribute positively to the cause of animal welfare. He indicated that while he respects the passion individuals have for animals, spreading misinformation only serves to demoralize those working tirelessly for their care.
Invitation for Collaboration
Owen has proposed a meeting for various animal welfare organizations and interested parties to discuss how they can better work together for the benefit of animals in the region. This meeting is scheduled for October 20, 2023, at 19:00, and aims to foster open dialogue about the RSPCA’s operations and to answer any questions regarding its practices. Owen expressed a desire for collaboration, stating, “My door is always open to anyone who wants to work together in that spirit.”
He acknowledged the emotional toll of the job, revealing that RSPCA staff and volunteers “grieve with every life lost” and dedicate their lives to rescuing and caring for animals. Owen highlighted the recent £1 million redevelopment of their facilities, which was designed to provide modern and safe environments for animals in need, not for luxury.
The statement has generated significant support online, with many expressing gratitude for the hard work of RSPCA volunteers. Emma Hardy, the Labour MP for Hull West and Haltemprice, also expressed her support but noted that she would be unable to attend the meeting due to parliamentary commitments.
Owen concluded by reaffirming the shared goal of preventing suffering and saving lives, urging anyone with constructive feedback to engage positively rather than resorting to personal attacks online.
Overall, the message from RSPCA Hull & East Riding’s leadership is a call for unity and collaboration in the pursuit of animal welfare, emphasizing that teamwork and understanding are essential in addressing the challenges they face.
