Tory MSP Calls for Exclusion After Rangers Coach Sacked
The recent dismissal of head coach Russell Martin by Rangers has sparked controversy, with Murdo Fraser, a Tory Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), calling for “no more vegans, Buddhists or Green Party members” in response to the club’s decision. Martin’s departure marks a significant moment in the club’s history, as his tenure lasted only four months, making it the shortest in Rangers’ records. His exit is viewed as a major setback for the club’s new American ownership.
Fraser’s remarks, posted on social media platform X, are believed to reference Martin’s personal beliefs, including his veganism and previous support for the Green Party, which he expressed in a 2018 interview with The Guardian. The MSP’s comments have ignited backlash on social media, with critics accusing him of discrimination and religious intolerance.
Reactions to Fraser’s Comments
The backlash was swift, with Christina Cannon, an SNP councillor in Glasgow, describing Fraser’s tweet as “strange” for an elected official. A spokesperson for the Green Party condemned Fraser’s statements as sending an “irresponsible message.” They stated, “This is a bizarre and ridiculous outburst, even by the repellent and undignified standards of Murdo Fraser. It is divisive and discriminatory and suggests Buddhists, vegans, and Green supporters are not welcome around him – which is a pretty irresponsible message to be sending.”
In defense of Fraser, a spokesperson indicated that the comments were intended as a joke, although this explanation has not quelled the criticism. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding political discourse in Scotland, particularly in relation to issues of identity and inclusion.
Fraser’s comments come at a time when Rangers are under pressure to improve their performance on the pitch. The club’s management is faced with the challenge of turning around its fortunes after a rocky start to the season. Observers note that embracing a more inclusive atmosphere may be crucial for the club’s success moving forward, especially in light of recent setbacks.
As debates continue, the implications of Fraser’s comments extend beyond football, reflecting broader societal attitudes toward diversity and acceptance within Scotland.
