Rescue Efforts Intensify After Madrid Hotel Collapse Leaves Four Missing
A building collapse in central Madrid has left four individuals unaccounted for, prompting a significant emergency response. The incident occurred at a hotel under construction on Hileras Street, where multiple floors gave way, resulting in injuries to several people. Emergency services quickly mobilized to initiate rescue operations.
Initially, local officials reported that three men and one woman were missing. However, sources from the National Police have since confirmed that only two individuals remain unlocated, as reported by the Spanish news organization El País. One construction worker sustained a leg fracture and was transported to the hospital, while others received treatment for various injuries and shock.
Efforts to stabilize the building are underway to facilitate the clearing of debris. A spokesperson for Madrid Emergency Services indicated that the Municipal Police Canine Unit will soon commence searches for the missing individuals.
Witness accounts have shed light on the chaos that unfolded during the collapse. A construction worker, who chose to remain anonymous, described the moment: “There could have been up to 40 people inside the building. At the moment of the collapse, we heard a noise from the floors, and then just a cloud of dust.”
The Spanish government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, addressed local media, stating that officials are still verifying the exact number of workers present at the site near the popular Puerta del Sol square. He characterized the incident as a workplace accident and noted that authorities are assessing the potential impact on surrounding buildings. Martín confirmed that the “entire perimeter” of the area has been evacuated for safety.
According to the building register, the site was a six-floor structure built in 1965, complete with a basement parking garage. The total area of the plot is approximately 1,070 square meters.
As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on locating the missing individuals and ensuring the safety of emergency responders. The Madrid community watches closely as efforts unfold in the wake of this tragic incident.
