Devlin Expresses Desire to Stay at Hearts Amid Contract Talks
Socceroos midfielder Cam Devlin has expressed his desire to remain with Heart of Midlothian FC as he navigates ongoing contract negotiations. Speaking to ESPN from Montreal, where he is preparing for international duties, the 27-year-old emphasized his commitment to focusing on football rather than the details of his contract situation.
Devlin, who has been instrumental in Hearts’ strong start to the Scottish Premiership season, has played every minute of the club’s league matches under new head coach Derek McInnes. His performances have helped the team secure a solid position heading into the October international break.
Contract Negotiations in the Background
As his contract approaches its conclusion, McInnes has publicly stated his wish for Devlin to extend his stay at Tynecastle, urging him to clarify his intentions soon. Despite this pressure, Devlin remains focused on his performance on the pitch, insisting he prefers to let the negotiations unfold in the background. “My agent and the club have been in contact, in terms of getting a new deal sorted,” Devlin said. “Everyone knows that since I’ve been there, I really enjoy it. I’ve got a home now, and I feel like I’m quite settled there. I love the city. Love the people. Everyone’s been so welcoming and nice to me. I’d love to stay.”
Devlin’s focus on the game is resolute. He noted, “I just have been wanting to focus on my football… My sole focus at the moment has been playing football for Hearts and trying to win as many games as possible.” His dedication appears to be paying off, with the team performing well in the league.
International Opportunities Await
Devlin last appeared for the Socceroos in September 2024, serving as an unused substitute during matches under then-coach Graham Arnold. However, his impressive form has earned him a call-up for Australia’s upcoming fixtures against Oman and Iran under new coach Tony Popovic. With only two international windows remaining before the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is announced, this call-up is significant for Devlin, mirroring his earlier debut in 2022.
While he did not play during the World Cup in Qatar, Devlin did secure a memorable moment by obtaining a jersey after Australia’s round-of-16 loss. Looking ahead, he is eager to make a mark in the next World Cup. “I’m old enough now to know how it works,” he stated, reflecting on the competitive nature of Australian football. “It’s not a given to be selected in the Socceroos.”
As the A-League continues to produce talented players and the national team grows stronger, Devlin understands the importance of hard work and dedication. “You’ve just got to put your head down, work as hard as you can and, hopefully, that’s enough to impress,” he concluded, signaling his commitment to both club and country.
