Minister Gorčević Urges Timely Appointments to Constitutional Court
Minister of European Affairs Maida Gorčević expressed her expectation that lawmakers will secure appointments for vacant judicial positions within the Constitutional Court during next Tuesday’s session. Gorčević emphasized the urgency of this matter, stating that Montenegro cannot afford delays, especially as the country aims to close all negotiation chapters, including those concerning the rule of law and judicial functionality, by the end of next year.
In a post on social media platform X, Gorčević highlighted the importance of lawmakers approaching this issue responsibly and in accordance with the qualifications of the nominated candidates. She stated, “Montenegro has no time to wait—by the end of next year, we have the opportunity to close all negotiation chapters, including Chapters 23 and 24.”
Gorčević specifically urged opposition lawmakers to take this opportunity to demonstrate their pro-European orientation through meaningful contributions. She noted the challenges faced in judicial appointments and expressed optimism regarding the recent identification of two candidates for the Constitutional Court judgeship.
While acknowledging the complexities involved in political consultations for such appointments, Gorčević stressed the necessity for a mature democratic society and European standards. “We must not normalize incomplete institutions and tactical delays in appointments,” she stated.
Her call to action reflects a broader push within Montenegro to strengthen its judicial system and align more closely with European Union standards. The upcoming session represents a critical moment for lawmakers to address these vacancies and move forward with necessary reforms.
The Minister’s remarks come at a time when Montenegro is navigating significant political and social challenges, making the timely filling of these judicial positions even more pressing. Gorčević’s appeal aims to unify political factions in a shared commitment to progress and stability as the nation approaches key milestones in its European integration journey.
