Ratcliffe Backs Amorim for Long-Term Success at Manchester United
Co-owner of Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, expressed his commitment to giving head coach Ruben Amorim ample time to improve the team’s performance. Despite a challenging start to the season, which has seen the Portuguese coach achieve only 10 wins in his 10-month tenure, Ratcliffe is prepared to wait until the end of Amorim’s contract in 2027 before making any significant decisions regarding his future.
During an appearance on The Business podcast, Ratcliffe pointed to the initial struggles of other successful managers as a reason for patience. He referenced Mikel Arteta, who faced criticism during his early years at Arsenal but eventually turned the club’s fortunes around. Ratcliffe stated, “Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That’s where I would be, three years, because football is not overnight.”
As Amorim marked his 50th match in charge of Manchester United with a 2-0 victory recently, questions about his effectiveness continue to surface. His current win rate of 40% is the lowest for any permanent United manager since Frank O’Farrell in the 1970s. This record has fueled calls from some supporters for his dismissal.
Despite the pressure, Ratcliffe emphasized the importance of avoiding “knee-jerk” reactions to the team’s performance. He criticized the media’s expectations for immediate success, saying, “You can’t run a club like Manchester United on knee jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week.” His comments suggest a desire to establish a more stable and long-term vision for the club.
The current climate at Old Trafford illustrates the challenges Amorim faces as he attempts to build a competitive squad. Supporters remain anxious, but with Ratcliffe’s backing, there seems to be a commitment to a more gradual approach to improvement. As the season progresses, the focus will be on whether Amorim can turn the tide and prove his capabilities over the next few years.
