Weight Loss Injections Show Promise for Autoimmune Conditions
A general practitioner in London has highlighted potential benefits of weight loss injections that extend beyond their primary purpose. Dr. Kaywaan Khan, who practices on Harley Street, reported that users of GLP-1 medications, originally developed for diabetes management, may also experience relief from autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis.
In comments made during a recent consultation, Dr. Khan explained that weight loss drugs, including WeGovy and Mounjaro, might not only assist with weight reduction but could also help alleviate inflammation associated with certain health issues. “Weight loss injections like WeGovy and Mounjaro do more than help you lose weight,” Dr. Khan stated. “They could also help to calm conditions like psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis.”
Research indicates that GLP-1 medications may lower inflammation levels in the body, which is particularly relevant for those suffering from autoimmune disorders. Dr. Khan referred to several small studies and case reports revealing that patients with psoriasis often see clearer skin after initiating treatment with these weight loss medications. “Some people improved within a few months,” he noted, underscoring the potential efficacy of these injections.
For patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Khan cited data suggesting that individuals using weight loss medications reported “milder symptoms and better health markers.” He emphasized that while these medications are not a cure for such conditions, they may serve as a beneficial adjunct to existing treatments for suitable patients.
Beyond psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Khan pointed out that individuals with Lupus might also experience advantages from these medications. “Early reports look safe and show weight and kidney health benefits, and in some cases, reduced symptoms from those taking weight loss medications,” he stated. “If you live with an autoimmune condition and meet criteria for medical weight management, a GLP-1 medication may offer a two-for-one: weight loss, plus a reduction in inflammation.”
Despite the promising findings, Dr. Khan cautioned that GLP-1 medications are not suitable for everyone. He urged prospective users to consult a specialist before starting treatment. “Very rarely, skin can flare, so report any new or worsening rashes,” he advised. “Never stop your dermatologist or rheumatologist treatment without advice.”
As the medical community continues to explore the multifaceted benefits of GLP-1 medications, further research will be crucial in confirming these findings and understanding the full scope of their therapeutic potential.
