The family of a 19-year-old student from Glasgow is calling for an independent investigation following his tragic death last month. Christmas Kazadi Boina was discovered dead at a flat he shared with his girlfriend in the Castlemilk area on September 27, 2023. His mother, Tara Boina, is seeking clarity after viewing her son’s body and noticing significant bruising, despite police stating there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Christmas, described by family and friends as “bright” and “ambitious,” was pursuing a degree in graphic design at City of Glasgow College. He was also volunteering at a local law firm, where he was eager to gain experience for his future career. His family has expressed deep sorrow over his loss, emphasizing that he was full of life and had many dreams ahead of him.

Calls for Transparency and Justice

A family spokesperson highlighted the numerous unanswered questions stemming from the police report on Christmas’s death. They believe the official account fails to capture the complete truth of what transpired. “Our hearts are broken, but our determination is strong. We loved Christmas deeply and we cannot rest until we know the truth about what happened to him,” the spokesperson stated.

Jean Paul Kasusula, director of the law firm where Christmas volunteered, accompanied Tara during her visit to the mortuary. He described the experience as “traumatic” and noted that it led Tara to request further investigation. “If the police report is confirmed, to take his life in those circumstances shows a level of desperation beyond imagination,” Kasusula remarked, reflecting on the profound impact of the tragedy on Christmas’s family and friends.

Kasusula mentioned that there is an expectation for another post-mortem examination to be conducted, following requests from the family. He added that Christmas was enthusiastic about his future and sought opportunities to understand the legal profession better.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

The family has initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support their legal battle, which has raised nearly £2,000 as of yesterday. The GoFundMe appeal emphasizes their belief that the circumstances surrounding Christmas’s death have not been thoroughly investigated. “His family is completely heartbroken and believes the circumstances surrounding his death have not been properly investigated,” the appeal states.

The community’s response has been overwhelmingly supportive, with many expressing their condolences and sharing memories of Christmas’s kind and caring nature. A spokesman for City of Glasgow College expressed their sorrow, stating, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Chris. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Chris’s family, friends, and all who knew him at this very difficult time.”

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service has confirmed that an investigation into the death is ongoing, and significant developments will be communicated to the family as they arise. As the family continues to seek justice for Christmas, their resolve remains strong amidst the grief.
