Glasgow Survey Reveals Weak Mobile Signals at Major Venues
A recent survey conducted by the Glasgow City Region has highlighted significant weaknesses in mobile phone signals at major venues across the city, including Celtic Park, Hampden Park, Ibrox, and the OVO Hydro. The findings indicate that during busy events, these locations experience severe capacity pressures, impacting the mobile experience for both residents and visitors.
The survey aimed to assess mobile network performance across Glasgow, focusing particularly on areas with high foot traffic during football matches, concerts, and other significant events. Data was collected from four major mobile operators: EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2/Virgin Media. The results reveal that the primary issue is not a lack of coverage, but rather the inability of networks to handle the increased demand created by large crowds.
Survey Findings and Implications
The data indicates that the existing infrastructure struggles to maintain reliable service during peak times. This leads to slower speeds and an overall unreliable mobile experience. The Glasgow City Region has shared these findings with the major mobile operators, urging them to implement necessary infrastructure improvements to enhance service quality where it is most needed.
Theresa Searle, Economic Development Manager at the Glasgow City Region Telecoms Unit, emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity. She stated, “We know how important reliable mobile connectivity is for residents, whether they are at a match, attending a concert, or simply using their phone in the city centre.” Searle added that by providing mobile operators with clear data and access to local infrastructure, they are ensuring that network upgrades will be effectively targeted to address the issues identified.
In response to the survey, the city is also developing a free mobile coverage checker. This tool will allow residents and businesses to easily determine which mobile networks offer the fastest speeds in their areas, enhancing awareness and potentially guiding consumer choices.

The Glasgow City Region’s proactive approach aims to improve the mobile experience at venues that attract large crowds. By working closely with mobile operators, the region seeks to create a more reliable environment for both event attendees and those living and working nearby.
As the demand for mobile connectivity continues to grow, particularly during high-traffic events, addressing these infrastructure challenges will be crucial. The findings of the survey serve as a vital step in ensuring that Glasgow’s mobile networks can keep pace with the needs of its vibrant community and the many visitors it attracts.
