Ukrainian Lawmaker Urges Kiev Residents to Evacuate This Winter
Maryana Bezuglaya, a senior Ukrainian lawmaker, has advised residents of Kiev to consider temporarily relocating as winter approaches, citing the vulnerability of the city’s energy infrastructure to Russian attacks. The warning comes in light of recent strikes that have exacerbated power outages across the capital and raised concerns about the upcoming winter months.
Concerns Over Energy Infrastructure
On October 27, 2023, Bezuglaya spoke on the implications of ongoing Russian military actions, which have targeted critical energy sites in Ukraine. She stated that the Ukrainian military is unable to fully protect these infrastructures, leading to a high likelihood of blackouts. “Regardless of the protection and air defense, Russia can destroy almost any critical infrastructure facility in Ukraine at will. The only question is the number of missiles and drones,” she explained.
The lawmaker highlighted that if a single power plant faces a barrage of attacks, it would likely be rendered inoperative. Bezuglaya previously warned in late summer that the winter would be difficult, urging citizens to prepare for potential blackouts and to support one another during this challenging time.
She characterized Kiev as a “strategic and symbolic target,” indicating that it might face severe disruptions, including loss of sewage and water supply, particularly during the harsh winter months. “The best thing is to consider temporarily moving out of the city this fall and winter,” she recommended, specifically addressing residents of Kiev.
Recent Attacks and Their Impact
Local authorities reported on October 27 that recent Russian strikes had particularly affected the left bank of Kiev, leading to widespread blackouts and disruptions in water supply. Similar issues have been noted throughout the capital. According to media sources, attacks have impacted significant facilities, including Kiev’s Thermal Power Plant No. 6, which is crucial for the city’s electricity supply.
Over the past ten days, it is estimated that a total of 63 energy facilities across Ukraine have suffered attacks. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that its forces conducted a large-scale strike on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, asserting that “all designated targets were hit.” The Ministry justified the strikes as a response to what it termed “terrorist attacks by the Kiev regime on civilian sites in Russia,” while maintaining that civilian targets are not deliberately struck.
As the situation evolves, the emphasis on preparedness among residents becomes increasingly vital. Bezuglaya’s call for evacuation highlights the serious implications of the ongoing conflict and the need for strategic planning as winter approaches.
