Newcastle United Appoints Ross Wilson as New Sporting Director
Newcastle United has appointed Ross Wilson as its new sporting director, filling the position previously held by Paul Mitchell. This announcement follows a period of transition for the club, which has seen changes in its leadership structure. Wilson, who formerly served as the sporting director at Rangers, will oversee sporting strategy, development, and recruitment across the club’s men’s, women’s, and academy teams based at St James’ Park.
Wilson steps into the role after Mitchell departed in June 2023, just 11 months after he took on the responsibilities following the exit of Dan Ashworth. His appointment coincides with the arrival of new chief executive officer David Hopkinson, whose presence was confirmed last month.
In a statement, Wilson expressed his enthusiasm for joining Newcastle United, acknowledging the club’s rich history and the expectations of its passionate supporters. “I’m absolutely delighted to be here at Newcastle United. This is such a special club and I fully understand the passion, ambition, and expectations of our incredible supporters,” he said. Wilson emphasized the commitment of the club’s ownership to foster growth and strengthen Newcastle United.
He also noted the constructive discussions he has had with the ownership team and head coach Eddie Howe. “The trust, cohesion, and alignment we’re building already feels strong,” Wilson added. “We believe that being united as a team will be so important as we continue to move the club forward together.”
This change in leadership reflects Newcastle’s ambition to enhance its performance on the pitch and in management. With Wilson at the helm of sporting decisions, the club aims to build on its recent successes and develop a robust strategy for future growth. As Newcastle continues to evolve, fans will be keen to see how Wilson’s vision translates into tangible results for the team.
