Barclays Plans New Pod Location Inside Eastgate Shopping Centre
Barclays is reportedly preparing to establish a new presence in Inverness, with plans to install a banking facility within the Eastgate Shopping Centre. This follows the temporary closure of its previous location in the Spectrum Centre, which ceased operations in late summer 2023 after the building housing it was unexpectedly shut down.
The banking giant has been actively seeking a new site since the closure. Newly filed building warrants indicate that Barclays aims to create a “freestanding temporary structure” described as a “pre-built self-contained pod” inside the shopping centre. The estimated cost for this “micropod” is approximately £30,000. While the specific location within the Eastgate Shopping Centre has not been disclosed, this development marks a significant step for the bank as it attempts to regain its footing in the local market.
Background on Barclays in Inverness
Barclays has experienced a turbulent few years in Inverness. Prior to spring 2022, the bank operated a full branch on Union Street. However, it transitioned to a Barclays Local facility within the Spectrum Centre, which ultimately proved to be a short-lived solution. The closure of the Spectrum Centre left residents without access to essential banking services, prompting a commitment from Barclays to find a new venue.
The proposed micropod is intended to offer many of the functions of a full branch, although it will not provide over-the-counter cash facilities. Questions remain as to whether this new installation will serve as a permanent replacement for the former Barclays Local or if it is merely a temporary measure while the bank continues its search for a more permanent location.
Future Prospects for Barclays in the Region
As the situation develops, Barclays has been approached for comment regarding its plans for the new pod and its overall strategy for the Inverness area. The community is keen to understand how the bank intends to address the growing demand for accessible banking services following its recent challenges.
Meanwhile, the former Union Street branch has been acquired by an undisclosed buyer, further underscoring the changes in the local banking landscape. The establishment of the micropod within Eastgate Shopping Centre could signal a renewed commitment by Barclays to serve the Inverness community, albeit in a modified capacity.
