DPS Faces Criticism for Opposition to Zeta Wastewater Project
The ongoing political debate in Montenegro has intensified following remarks from Miroslav Boljević, the head of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) council in Zeta. He stated that “without the Democratic Party of Socialists, the referendum would not have the necessary majority.” This comment has sparked criticism from the Movement for Europe Now (PES), highlighting a perceived contradiction in the DPS’s stance on critical local projects.
According to PES, the DPS presents itself as a pro-European advocate on paper, yet their actions suggest otherwise. The party’s local opposition to the construction of a wastewater treatment facility in Zeta contrasts sharply with its claims of support at the national level. PES articulates that this inconsistency reveals either a lack of political direction within the DPS or a dual approach: one focused on genuine local interests and another aimed at maintaining a favorable public image.
The construction of the wastewater treatment facility is deemed essential for Zeta, addressing long-standing issues related to wastewater management. PES argues that the DPS’s recent actions align more closely with the views of the Democratic Montenegro (DNP) and its leader, Milan Knežević, despite the DPS’s reluctance to publicly acknowledge this alignment.
PES emphasizes that the DPS’s opposition to the project signifies a prioritization of party interests over the welfare of the citizens of Montenegro, particularly those in Podgorica and Zeta. They assert that the wastewater treatment facility represents one of the most significant developmental and ecological initiatives for the region, capable of resolving decades-old problems.
The party’s critics contend that opposing this vital infrastructure project is not a genuine concern for the community but rather a reflection of political calculations aimed at preserving party ratings. As the debate continues, the implications for the local population and environmental health remain at the forefront of discussions in Montenegrin politics.
In summary, the conflicting positions held by the DPS raise questions about the party’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of its constituents. The future of the wastewater treatment facility project is now a focal point of not only environmental concern but also political accountability in Montenegro.
