Cambridge Plans Over 400 New Homes with £80 Million Investment

Plans have been unveiled for the construction of more than 400 new homes in north Cambridge, as part of an £80 million investment by the Cambridge City Council. The proposed development includes over 200 new council homes and more than 200 private residences, along with a significant redevelopment of community facilities in the Arbury Court area.

The council is actively seeking public feedback on these plans, which were shaped following community engagement sessions held in spring 2025. This initiative is part of the council’s North Cambridge Framework for Change, a comprehensive strategy aimed at revitalizing areas such as Arbury, King’s Hedges, and Chesterton.

Key Features of the Development

The proposed changes include the demolition of existing homes and commercial properties at Arbury Court, making way for more than 100 council homes and an equal number of private residences. Importantly, the new designs will incorporate features to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities. In addition, new commercial units are planned for existing Arbury Court traders, along with enhanced community facilities, including a new library.

The redevelopment will also address local green spaces, replacing the current park with expanded areas for recreation and play. A council spokesperson emphasized the importance of community input in shaping these new spaces, aiming for layouts and facilities that meet local needs.

Support for Residents and Businesses

Cllr Gerri Bird, Cabinet Member for Housing, expressed the council’s commitment to investing in areas that have previously seen limited development. “We want to truly change people’s lives for the better, with modern, energy-efficient and accessible council homes, while also providing good-quality private homes which are equally highly needed,” he stated.

Residents who may need to relocate during the development will receive support that includes financial compensation, logistical assistance, and priority access to new homes for council tenants. The council has also pledged to ensure that current businesses at Arbury Court can continue to operate throughout the construction process. They will have the right to return to new permanent locations once the redevelopment is complete.

Public consultations are scheduled to take place on several dates, providing residents with opportunities to voice their opinions. These events include meetings on November 17, 2025, at the Akeman Community Centre; November 22, 2025, at the Meadows Community Centre; and December 1, 2025, at Brown’s Field Community Centre. Additionally, a webinar will be held on November 27, 2025.

The council is keen to hear from the community as it works towards a transformative vision for north Cambridge, aiming to enhance living conditions and foster a more vibrant local environment.
