Family Remembers Cyclist Robert Sansom Following Fatal Crash

A family is mourning the loss of Robert Sansom, known affectionately as Bob, who died in a cycling accident in Cambridgeshire on August 7, 2023. The incident occurred when the 80-year-old collided with a white Skoda Karoq while riding on Childerley Drive. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene shortly after 21:15, where they pronounced Sansom dead.
In a heartfelt tribute, his family described him as a “much-loved dad, grandad, brother, uncle and friend” with a deep passion for cycling. They highlighted his diverse interests, stating, “He enjoyed walking, gliding, beekeeping, volunteering, and travelling in his long and active life. He will be deeply missed by many.”
The driver of the Skoda, a man in his 30s from Newmarket, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Following the incident, he was released on bail and is scheduled to return to Parkside Police Station on November 7, 2023.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the collision or the events leading up to it. They encourage anyone with information or relevant dashcam footage to contact the police, referencing Operation Whetstone, or to call 101.
As the community reflects on the loss of a beloved figure, the police have underscored the importance of gathering information to aid in their ongoing inquiries. The tragic accident has left many in the local area grieving, and a sense of loss permeates as the family remembers a man who touched the lives of those around him.
