Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises (GFDE) Ltd has announced the appointment of two new directors, marking a significant step forward for the company. David Payne and Ben Walker bring a wealth of experience to the board, which oversees the fish market, dock operations, and various port-related activities. Their appointments reflect GFDE’s commitment to growth and innovation in the traditional and emerging port-based industries.

David Payne, a local resident who began his career at the docks 17 years ago, has been appointed as operations director. Starting as a “lumper,” a worker responsible for loading and unloading cargo, Payne has advanced through various roles, eventually becoming the fish market manager. In his new position, he will manage operations across multiple sectors, including sales, logistics, and slipway services. He expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “It is a privilege to be asked to join the board of directors and to have a seat and voice at the table. I aim to help keep the business going in the right direction.”

Joining Payne on the board is Ben Walker, who has been with GFDE since 2013. Initially working in private accountancy, Walker became finance manager in 2016 and now takes on a directorial role. He highlighted the importance of this appointment, saying, “It means a lot, and recognizes effort over a decade or so. We’ve taken on quite a lot, with three additional trading companies starting, all of which are very different.” Walker sees the potential for growth in the port sector, emphasizing, “I see the port as the biggest opportunity.”

GFDE is a multifaceted organization that controls several key operations, including the Grimsby Fish Market, the Port of Grimsby East, and the Grimsby Shipyard Services. The company also oversees the Offshore Training Centre and Grimsby Fish Market Ltd, its trading arm. The board includes stakeholders from the catching, sales, and fish processing sectors, as well as representatives from the local authority, and is chaired by maritime lawyer Andrew Oliver.

Oliver praised the new appointments, stating, “To be able to appoint two directors of the calibre of Ben and Danny is a real show of strength, and underlines the job that Martyn Boyers, our chief executive, has done to bring them on.” He added that promoting individuals from within the organization reflects a successful business, highlighting the deep knowledge and talent available at GFDE.

The Grimsby Fish Market is a key supplier of fish to various sectors, including food processors and caterers. Its longstanding international relationships, particularly with partners in Iceland and Scandinavia, have been nurtured for over 30 years, solidifying its position in the market.

The leadership changes at GFDE come at a time of opportunity for the organization, as it continues to expand its operations and adapt to the evolving demands of the maritime industry. The new directors are poised to drive the company forward, ensuring it remains a vital player in the port and offshore wind sectors.
