Nuneaton Council in Talks with KEGS for Former Woolworths Space

Negotiations are underway for a new tenant to occupy the former Woolworths store located at 22 Queens Road in Nuneaton. According to a statement from the Nuneaton Borough Council, discussions are being held with King Edward VI College (commonly known as KEGS), which already operates from the unit above the former retail space.

The existing facility serves as a centre of excellence for Creative Arts and Tech Ed, alongside a Higher Education Centre for Nuneaton. The potential acquisition of the ground floor, previously occupied by Woolworths, TJ Hughes, and Poundland, could further enhance KEGS’s contribution to the local community.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the council expressed commitment to revitalizing the space: “The borough council continues to work closely with KEGS to ensure that the 22 Queens Road building in Nuneaton is brought fully back into use.” This initiative reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to repurpose vacant commercial properties and stimulate local economic growth.

Prior to these discussions, Wilko had planned to relocate its Church Street store into the old Woolworths site, with a lease agreement signed. However, the collapse of Wilko has left the space vacant, prompting the council to explore alternative uses.

The KEGS negotiations coincide with additional developments in the area. North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College is set to establish a ‘Digital Skills and Innovation Centre’ along with a training restaurant in part of the remaining Co-op building on Abbey Street. This project aims to enhance vocational training and digital skills in the region, further contributing to Nuneaton’s educational landscape.

The ongoing discussions regarding the former Woolworths site highlight a proactive approach by local authorities to ensure that community spaces remain functional and beneficial to residents. As talks progress, the potential for KEGS to expand its footprint in Nuneaton represents a significant opportunity for both the college and the borough.
