Rite Aid Closes All Pharmacies: What Customers Need to Know
Rite Aid has officially closed all of its pharmacy locations, a significant decision affecting numerous regular customers who now face uncertainty regarding their prescriptions. The company announced on its website that all of its stores are “now closed,” thanking customers for their loyalty over the years. This closure follows the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2023, marking the second such filing since October 2022.
In a statement, Matt Schroeder, the CEO of Rite Aid, highlighted the challenges the company faced amid the “rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes.” He stated, “As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible.”
With all pharmacies shuttered, customers will need to transition to new pharmacy providers to fill their prescriptions. Rite Aid has taken steps to assist this process by providing resources on its website. Customers can access information to help them find new pharmacy locations and request their pharmacy records from Rite Aid.
Rite Aid’s announcement in May indicated that the company was “working to facilitate a smooth transfer of customer prescriptions to other pharmacies.” As part of its restructuring efforts, Rite Aid is in the process of selling its assets to major retailers, including CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, Albertsons, Kroger, and Giant Eagle.
In addition to these pharmacy sales, Rite Aid is also divesting its Thrifty Ice Cream brand to Hilrod Holdings for $19.2 million. At its peak, Rite Aid operated thousands of stores across the United States, but by May 2023, only 1,240 locations remained active.
As the situation evolves, Rite Aid’s focus will be on ensuring that customers receive the necessary support to continue their pharmacy needs while navigating this transition.
