Somerset Council Moves to Purchase 15 Homes for Urgent Needs

Somerset Council has initiated plans to acquire 15 council houses aimed at providing emergency accommodation for families in urgent need. The decision comes as the council allocates a surplus of £3.3 million from its Housing Revenue Account to fund this initiative. The move is a response to the pressing demand for social housing in the region.

The council, led by the Liberal Democrats, aims to reduce the long waiting lists for social housing by purchasing properties located in areas of highest demand. These new homes are expected to offer improved living conditions and greater stability for families, serving as a preferable alternative to temporary accommodations such as bed and breakfasts.

Cllr Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, emphasized the severity of the housing crisis facing local communities. He stated, “We know the housing crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing Somerset’s communities, and the Liberal Democrats are determined to take action. This investment will provide more families in urgent need with a safe, secure place to stay while we work with them to find a permanent home. It’s another example of how we are using every pound available to support local people and build stronger, fairer communities.”

Strategic Investment for Long-Term Solutions

Alongside the acquisition plans, the council passed a motion calling on the Government to grant local authorities the necessary long-term powers and funding to develop more affordable and sustainable housing options. This motion, proposed by Cllr Habib Farbahi and seconded by Cllr Henry Hobhouse, reflects the council’s broader strategy to address housing shortages in the region.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, the Lead Member for Communities, Housing Revenue Account, Culture, and Equalities and Diversity, reinforced the council’s commitment to ensuring that every individual has access to decent housing. “A decent, affordable home should be a basic right, not a privilege,” she remarked. “By investing £3.3 million into purchasing additional council houses, we’re taking practical steps to help people who need it most. This decision means families won’t be left in temporary accommodation for months on end. It’s about stability, dignity, and creating communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.”

In the past year, since the Liberal Democrats took control of Somerset Council, the authority has facilitated the delivery of over 2,600 new homes, including 900 affordable homes. This new investment builds on that progress, forming part of the council’s ongoing strategy to create sustainable and inclusive communities.
