Avoid These 4 Heating Mistakes to Save Money This Autumn

As autumn arrives, many households are activating their heating systems for the first time in months. Unfortunately, this transition can lead to costly mistakes that inflate energy bills. According to heating specialist Ryan Willdig from Heatforce, UK residents could be wasting hundreds of pounds annually due to common errors in heating practices.

One of the main mistakes homeowners make is adjusting the thermostat too high in an attempt to heat the home faster. “When it’s cold, many of us will boost the thermostat, thinking that it will heat our home faster,” Willdig explained. “This isn’t the case. While it won’t heat your home any faster, it will waste energy and therefore waste money.” He emphasized that each degree above 19-20 degrees Celsius could add approximately 10 percent to annual heating costs.

Key Heating Mistakes to Avoid

Willdig identified several other prevalent errors that can lead to increased energy expenses. The first mistake is leaving the heating on all day. Contrary to popular belief, maintaining a low temperature throughout the day is not more cost-effective than using heating only when needed. “It’s far more efficient and cost-effective to only use the heating when required,” said Willdig. He also advised homeowners to turn off radiators in unused rooms while ensuring the doors remain closed to prevent heat loss.

Another common issue arises from blocking radiators with furniture or decorative covers. Willdig cautioned that placing items in front of radiators traps heat, forcing the heating system to work harder. “Radiators shouldn’t have anything in front of them. They need to be completely bare to ensure the heat can travel around the room properly,” he stated. This obstruction can lead to higher bills and a strain on the heating system.

Neglecting regular boiler servicing is another mistake many make. Willdig pointed out that while maintenance may not be enjoyable, it is crucial for efficiency. Skipping annual boiler services can allow minor issues to go unnoticed, potentially leading to more significant malfunctions during the peak winter months. He recommends scheduling a service in September to avoid complications later.

Finally, homeowners often overlook the importance of proper insulation. Poorly insulated spaces, particularly attics, walls, and windows, can lead to rapid heat loss. Willdig suggested simple and cost-effective solutions, such as using draught excluders and radiator reflectors. Taking just a couple of hours on the weekend to enhance insulation can significantly improve the warmth of a home and reduce monthly bills.

By avoiding these common pitfalls, homeowners can enjoy a cozy and cost-effective autumn. As energy prices continue to rise, being mindful of heating practices is essential for managing expenses while ensuring comfort.
