BBC Calls Police to Investigate Drug Allegations on Strictly Come Dancing
The BBC has engaged police assistance to investigate serious drug allegations involving its flagship show, Strictly Come Dancing. This decision follows a preliminary inquiry conducted by lawyers into claims that two of the show’s stars have used cocaine. The inquiry has put the popular dance competition under intense scrutiny, especially as the new series prepares to air in just a few weeks.
According to reports from the Mirror, detectives are exploring additional claims that may extend beyond the initial accusations. An insider described this as a significant development in the BBC’s ongoing challenges, emphasizing the dramatic nature of police involvement. “This is a very dramatic turn of events,” the insider noted, “It’s hugely controversial that you’ve now got Scotland Yard detectives probing Strictly.”
As Strictly Come Dancing gears up for its 23rd season, the show has been at the center of various controversies, raising questions about its future on air. The BBC has faced criticism over allegations of bullying and inappropriate conduct, marking this as the first time law enforcement has been called in regarding the show.
A spokesperson for the BBC declined to comment specifically on the police investigation but reiterated the organization’s commitment to addressing serious complaints. “We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us,” the representative stated. “We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns.”
In early March 2023, allegations regarding drug use were formally submitted to the BBC by Russells Solicitors, acting on behalf of a celebrity participant. This prompted the BBC to enlist the services of Pinsent Masons, a leading law firm, to further investigate the claims. Reports indicate that the drug use may have been widely acknowledged among cast members and production staff.
As part of the investigation, former contestants and professional dancers are being encouraged to share any concerns with the legal team. In light of the allegations, the BBC is reportedly considering offering rehabilitation options to the involved performers. There is also discussion about implementing random drug testing for upcoming tours, which are known for their after-show parties.
A source close to the situation conveyed the seriousness with which the BBC is treating these allegations. “The BBC is taking the allegations really seriously. Bosses are aware of the two stars in question and have a duty of care to make sure they’re OK,” the source explained. They added that while drug testing may not be enforced during the main show, random checks for the tour are under consideration.
As the investigation continues, both the BBC and the Metropolitan Police have been approached for further comments. The outcome of this inquiry could have significant implications for one of Britain’s most beloved television shows, as it navigates these challenging allegations.
