Cambridgeshire Tea Room Named Best Café in County at Awards
A tea room in Cambridgeshire has earned the title of the best café in the county at the recent England’s Business Awards, just a year after its opening. Rumpoles of St Ives, operated by husband and wife team Shane Fazackerley and Guoli Xu, received the award, a recognition they describe as a significant honour for a new establishment.
Mr. Fazackerley expressed surprise at the nomination, stating it came “totally out of the blue.” He noted, “When we got the letter through, we thought ‘Who’s done this?'” The nomination was made anonymously, leaving the couple curious about the identity of their supporter. “It’s great news. It’s such a big honour for such a small place and being so new. We’re really proud,” he added.
Building a Loyal Customer Base
Since opening in August 2022, Rumpoles of St Ives has cultivated a dedicated following of regular customers. Ms. Xu pays meticulous attention to the presentation and quality of the cakes and sandwiches, enhancing them with garnishes that set them apart from local competitors. Mr. Fazackerley commented on their growing reputation, saying, “That quality and detail has given us a bit of a reputation. With the sandwiches, it’s not just a sandwich on a plate. We’ve got salad and crisps, and they’re quite large sandwiches as well.”
The couple’s commitment to hospitality also plays a crucial role in their success. “My wife was a fashion designer, so she’s been the driving force behind the food design. But as well as doing a lot in the kitchen, she’s coming out and greeting customers. I do front of house as well. A lot of people that come here have become friends rather than just customers,” Mr. Fazackerley explained. This personal touch contributes to an inviting atmosphere where customers feel comfortable.
A Diverse Menu of Delights
For new patrons, Mr. Fazackerley highly recommends Rumpoles’ “legendary” cheese scones, made with fenugreek for a unique twist that customers “absolutely love.” The café offers a range of sandwiches and features around 10 to 12 cakes daily. Additionally, patrons can choose from four different types of scones, including a classic fruit scone served with jam and cream.
Following their win as the best café in Cambridgeshire, Rumpoles of St Ives is set to compete in the national Business Awards this upcoming November. Mr. Fazackerley stated, “It would be brilliant to get national recognition,” expressing their determination to continue delivering quality service and products.
Located at 22 Bridge Street, Rumpoles of St Ives operates from 10:00 to 17:00 on Mondays to Thursdays, 10:00 to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10:00 to 16:00 on Sundays. The couple’s dedication to quality and customer experience continues to resonate within the community, solidifying their place in the local dining scene.
