Daily Beast Expands with Appointment of Tom Latchem as Lead Correspondent

Former News of the World TV editor Tom Latchem has been appointed as the lead global correspondent for The Daily Beast. This strategic recruitment aligns with the publication’s ongoing editorial expansion under the leadership of chief content officer Joanna Coles and chief executive Ben Sherwood, both of whom joined the IAC-owned outlet in April 2024 with minority stakes.
Latchem, who garnered attention in the UK for his investigative work involving former GB News presenter Dan Wootton for Byline Times, has been working part-time for The Daily Beast over the summer. His notable reporting includes revealing plans regarding the Trump administration’s potential withdrawal of Covid vaccines from the US market.
In a statement on LinkedIn, Latchem expressed his enthusiasm for joining The Daily Beast, describing it as a “media organisation on the rise.” He noted that the publication is experiencing growth in both readership and profits, alongside a recent global hiring spree.
Strategic Moves and New Ventures
Latchem highlighted The Daily Beast’s expansion into broadcasting as a key factor in his decision to join the team. The outlet has launched successful podcasts and secured a new deal with Netflix, marking the TV giant’s initial foray into news documentaries. This move complements Latchem’s background and skills, further enhancing his excitement about the role.
“The Beast’s cheeky but intelligent, non-partisan yet engaging independent tabloid journalism resonates with my career-long approach,” Latchem stated. He emphasized that the publication’s focus on exposing hypocrisy and scrutinizing powerful figures aligns with his journalistic ethos.
Latchem, who has spent the past three years transitioning back to full-time journalism after years of freelancing, is proud of his achievements. His dedication to the field is evident, as he stated, “Anyone who knows me knows how much I love journalism.”
Coles indicated in June that The Daily Beast is benefiting from increased referral traffic on platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook. This growth underscores the publication’s successful adaptation to the evolving media landscape.
As The Daily Beast continues to expand its reach and influence in the competitive media environment, Latchem’s appointment signals a commitment to enhancing its global coverage and engaging storytelling.
