Educating Yorkshire Stars: Where Are They Now After 12 Years?

The acclaimed documentary series Educating Yorkshire first captivated audiences in the UK more than a decade ago. As it prepares for a return, many are curious about the lives of its original stars, who have experienced a range of personal transformations since the series aired. The show highlighted the daily experiences and challenges faced by both staff and students at Thornhill Community Academy in Dewsbury.
Transformations of Key Figures
Among the most notable figures from the series is Jonny Mitchell, the charismatic headteacher who quickly became a fan favorite. After leaving Thornhill Academy, he took on the role of headteacher at Co-op Academy Leeds and later moved to Netherwood Academy in Wombwell, Barnsley, in 2020. Earlier this year, he made headlines due to his reported split from his wife and a new relationship with a 25-year-old, which was publicly acknowledged on social media.
Another standout student, Ryan Ward, captured the hearts of viewers when he expressed his aspirations of becoming the Prime Minister. In a twist of fate, he now works at a flooring company with his parents near Thornhill Academy. His journey highlights a commitment to helping others, reminiscent of his early dreams of public service.
The series also featured Neil Giffin, who faced a starkly different fate. He was banned from teaching indefinitely after being found guilty of inappropriate conduct with former pupils between 2007 and 2008. This serves as a cautionary tale amid the otherwise uplifting narratives from the show.
Another memorable student, Tom Foster, known for his humor, reflected on his life since the series. At 22, he admitted to having a varied work experience, including roles in engineering and warehouse jobs. He expressed contentment with how the show portrayed him, stating, “I’m 100 percent happy with how the show portrayed me. That’s exactly who I am—loud, outgoing, and always trying to make people laugh.”
Success and Struggles of Other Stars
In a more troubling turn, Kamrrem Harris was sentenced to 27 months in prison in 2018 for assaulting an individual outside the Scarborough Pub in Dewsbury. This incident occurred on the same night that Jonathan Binns lost his life in a separate altercation.
Known affectionately as “Mushy,” Musharaf Asghar faced significant challenges due to his stammer, which he worked to overcome with the help of English teacher Matthew Burton. His determination led him to become a public speaker, sharing his inspiring story on platforms such as Good Morning Britain in 2022. In a full-circle moment, Burton has since taken on the role of headteacher at Thornhill and authored a book discussing the complexities of teenage life.
Another dedicated educator from the series, Michael Steer, continued his commitment to teaching, working at Offett Academy and North Huddersfield Trust School. His dedication to his students was highlighted in the series when he went above and beyond to assist a group struggling with mathematics.
As Educating Yorkshire prepares for its next chapter, the journeys of its stars reflect a wide spectrum of human experiences—ranging from triumphs and fresh beginnings to heart-wrenching setbacks. The show’s legacy continues to resonate, capturing the realities of education and personal growth in an engaging manner.
