According to a report titled “The Death of Leggings” by the retail analyst group EDITED, leggings accounted for nearly 47 percent of all athleisure bottoms in 2022. This year, however, that figure has dropped sharply to 38.7 percent. This decline in sales demonstrates a notable change in consumer preferences, particularly among younger demographics.

The shift in style is gaining traction, as searches for “baggy gym outfits” have surged by an impressive 400 percent on Pinterest over the past year, according to Vogue. With this growing interest, brands like Nike are adapting by leaning into the trend, offering consumers more options in loose-fitting attire.

Fashion insiders are weighing in on the trend, with Emily Oberg, founder of Sporty & Rich, stating, “A super fit girl hiding her body under baggy clothes is more appealing than skimpy, tight workout clothes.” This sentiment resonates with many in the generation, suggesting a move towards comfort and functionality over form-fitting styles.

Despite the backlash against leggings, some fitness enthusiasts argue that oversized pants may not be practical for all types of workouts. One gym-goer commented, “Try a spin class in big pants and see what happens.” Fitness influencer Kira Stokes echoed these concerns, stating, “Try running, cycling, jumping rope, or high-intensity interval training in big baggy oversized pants – they will receive a big ‘F’ for functionality.”

The discussion surrounding leggings extends beyond just fashion. Even popular colors such as sage and olive have been labeled “millennial green,” indicating a broader re-evaluation of what is considered stylish. In addition, traditional formal footwear like stilettos has also fallen out of favor, as many consumers are opting for more casual footwear instead.

As Gen Z continues to redefine fashion trends, they are also becoming more conscious consumers. According to stylist Rochelle White, this generation is increasingly turning to second-hand options, utilizing apps like Vinted and Depop for thrift shopping. This shift not only reflects changing fashion preferences but also a growing awareness of sustainable consumption.
