Jackfield Brass Band Delivers Captivating Concert at Edgmond Hall

The Jackfield Brass Band captivated audiences during a recent concert at Edgmond Village Hall on September 5, 2025. Celebrated for its championship quality, the band presented an eclectic programme that showcased a variety of musical genres, appealing to the diverse interests of the large audience in attendance.
Founded in 1893 as a drum and fife band, the Jackfield Brass Band evolved into a full brass ensemble by 1895 and earned the title of ‘championship band’ in the 2000s. This impressive history was reflected in the evening’s performances, which featured transcriptions of classical works such as Rimski-Korsakov’s ‘Capriccio Espagnol’. Additionally, the band performed music that resonated with film enthusiasts, including pieces from John Williams’s ‘Jurassic Park’ and Eric Coates’s iconic march for ‘The Dam Busters’.
The concert also highlighted the remarkable talents of several soloists from within the band. Jack Hoof, a skilled cornetist, delivered a lively rendition of ‘Song and Dance’ by Philip Sparke, showcasing his musicality and flair. Pete Woodley enchanted the audience with a beautiful performance of ‘Be My Love’ on the euphonium, while Kevin Short demonstrated the unique qualities of the baritone with his interpretation of SF9’s pop song ‘My Story and Song’. The evening also featured Matthew Johnson, who radiantly played the flugelhorn in a delightful version of the 1964 classic ‘Under the Boardwalk’.
To conclude the afternoon, the band moved the audience with a heartfelt performance of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ as their encore, leaving a lasting impression on those present. The concert was further enhanced by the informative and humorous commentary provided by the concert’s conductor, Simon Platford MBE.
In summary, the Jackfield Brass Band delivered a thoroughly entertaining performance that not only showcased their musical prowess but also created a memorable experience for the audience. The event, organized by the Newport Music Club, highlighted the cultural richness of the community and the enduring appeal of live music.
