MLAs Discuss Belfast Airport Rail Link Feasibility Ahead of Decision
Transport officials in Northern Ireland are examining a feasibility study on the potential reopening of the Knockmore rail line, which has been closed since 2003. This initiative aims to connect Antrim, Lisburn, and Belfast International Airport, with the primary outcomes from the study expected to be published by late September.
During an Adjournment Debate at Stormont, Liz Kimmins, the Infrastructure Minister, discussed the importance of reinstating the Knockmore rail line. This plan has garnered long-standing support from various stakeholders, as it would reconnect communities including Crumlin, Glenavy, and Ballinderry while extending public transport access to Belfast International Airport.
Advocates argue that this railway connection could significantly enhance accessibility and public transport options for residents in Templepatrick, Ballyclare, and surrounding areas. The urgency of the matter has been amplified by recent discussions regarding a proposed extension plan for Belfast City Airport, which could potentially make it the first airport on the island of Ireland connected by rail.
Translink is actively considering the feasibility of reconnecting the Knockmore route, including a new airport connection. The current study is assessing engineering requirements, demand forecasting, and cost estimates. Additionally, the study is reviewing the reopening of the three stations that were previously operational on this line and appraising three proposed locations for a new station at Belfast International Airport.
In the Assembly, John Blair, an Alliance MLA representing South Antrim, emphasized the critical need for improved connectivity. He stated that conversations with constituents and local businesses reinforced the message that “connectivity is not a luxury; it is a necessity.” He remarked on the invaluable role of a reliable rail service for commuters and families, as well as for older residents wanting to remain linked to their communities.
Blair highlighted the broader benefits that reinstating the Knockmore line would bring, including enhanced access for domestic and international tourists, stimulation of sustainable economic growth, and progress towards decarbonisation and balanced regional development. Despite the potential advantages, he expressed frustration regarding the slow progress on the project, noting that it has been over two years since Translink committed to the feasibility study.
The MLA pointed out that while the completion of the report is an important milestone, it is just one step in a lengthy process. He urged the Department for Infrastructure to provide clarity on the timeline, budget, and commitment to proceed with this essential project.
In response to the debate, Minister Kimmins reiterated the significance of the Knockmore line for improving connectivity across Northern Ireland. She assured the Assembly that the feasibility study is under consideration and that updates would be forthcoming in the autumn.
She acknowledged the line’s importance not only for local communities but for ensuring that all regions are effectively served by a functioning rail network. Kimmins emphasized that achieving these objectives aligns with the government’s commitments to meet climate change targets and support economic growth throughout the region.
As discussions continue, stakeholders await further developments regarding the feasibility study and the future of the rail link to Belfast International Airport.
