Residents React to 22-Inch Rat Discovery: Five Steps to Deter Rodents

A recent discovery of a massive 22-inch rat in a home located in Redcar and Cleveland, North Yorkshire, has left local residents both shocked and concerned. The supersized rodent was found by a pest controller who was called to investigate reports of unusual activity in the area. Following the incident, images shared on social media by local politicians sparked widespread alarm, leading to a surge in online searches related to “giant rats UK.”
The emergence of this oversized rodent has raised fears among homeowners about potential infestations in their own properties. In response to these concerns, Sam Jenkinson, a garden shed expert from the retailer Tiger, has provided five effective strategies to help keep rats and mice at bay without resorting to harmful methods.
Effective Prevention Strategies
One of the most straightforward deterrents is to utilize the scent of peppermint. Rats are known to dislike the smell, making peppermint plants a useful addition to any garden. Jenkinson recommends planting peppermint around garden buildings, which not only helps keep pests away but also adds beauty to outdoor spaces with its delicate purple flowers during summer.
For those who prefer a more direct approach, creating a peppermint spray can be highly effective. A simple mixture of ten drops of peppermint oil, one cup of white vinegar, and one to two cups of water can be sprayed in areas where rat activity has been observed.
Another critical measure is to eliminate food sources that may attract these rodents. Garden buildings often become gathering spaces for entertaining, leading to leftover food that can attract pests. Cleaning these areas thoroughly after use is essential to remove any traces of food that could entice rats.
Sealing Entry Points and Maintaining Cleanliness
Rats are capable of squeezing through surprisingly small openings, so it is crucial to seal any holes in garden buildings. Jenkinson suggests using materials like tongue and groove boards, which are denser and less likely to develop gaps over time, compared to other materials such as OSB. Additionally, using wire mesh caulk can effectively seal these entry points.
For those with access to electricity in their garden buildings, investing in ultrasonic devices can serve as a deterrent. These devices emit high-frequency sound waves that are inaudible to humans but can drive rats and other vermin away. However, Jenkinson cautions that these may only be a temporary solution, and homeowners should consider a combination of methods for long-term effectiveness.
Regular cleaning is also vital in keeping gardens and garden buildings tidy. Maintaining a clean environment by removing debris, such as leaves and sticks, reduces the chances of attracting rats looking for nesting materials.
In summary, while the sight of a 22-inch rat may be alarming, there are several non-lethal strategies that homeowners can implement to protect their properties. By understanding the habits of these rodents and taking proactive measures, residents can reduce the likelihood of an infestation and maintain a safe, welcoming garden space.
