Saipan Film Unveils Tensions from 2002 World Cup Saga
The upcoming film Saipan explores the tumultuous relationship between Irish football manager Mick McCarthy and star player Roy Keane during the 2002 World Cup. Producer Trevor Birney faced skepticism regarding his decision to revisit this contentious chapter in football history, with some suggesting he was “mad” to tackle a subject that might “open old wounds.” The film highlights the fallout from a now-infamous incident during a pre-tournament training camp on the island of Saipan, which significantly impacted Irish football.
At the recent gala screening of Saipan at the Belfast Film Festival, Birney reflected on the potential emotional repercussions, stating that “friendships that have never been the same again since 2002 are going to be challenged again.” The film aims to capture not just the sports drama but also the cultural context of the time, which resonated deeply with fans and the Irish public.
Emotional Remembrances and Personal Connections
Among the cast is Eanna Hardwicke, who portrays Roy Keane. Now 23, he recalls the heightened emotions surrounding the fallout between McCarthy and Keane, which gripped Ireland. “I remember different adults telling me that this is the opinion I should hold about this event,” he said, reflecting on how the event shaped public sentiment. His childhood memories add depth to his performance, making it “all the more satisfying” to step into the role of a national icon.
Hardwicke described the moment he informed his mother about his casting as “overwhelming,” noting her mix of laughter and tears. He acknowledged the immense pressure of portraying someone so influential in Cork, where “every second person” has a story about Keane, making it a “daunting” role to play.
The film’s gala screening also featured Steve Coogan, who takes on the role of Mick McCarthy. Hardwicke praised Coogan as “one of the best” actors, although he humorously noted that neither of them would be mistaken for natural footballers.
The Broader Cultural Impact of Saipan
Attending the screening was football fan Alistair Evans, who wore a vintage t-shirt featuring Keane’s face. Evans shared his experience at the 2002 World Cup, recalling his initial reluctance to travel to Asia after Keane was sent home. He noted the division among fans during the tournament: “I remember being outside a pub, and there was a crowd singing for Roy Keane and there was a crowd of us singing for McCarthy. It was all a bit surreal.”
Directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, both Belfast natives, expressed their pride in showcasing the film at their hometown festival. Barros D’Sa emphasized that despite her lack of interest in football, the narrative transcends sports, addressing themes of national identity and masculinity. Leyburn added that the story is fundamentally psychological, capturing the intense dynamics between the two central characters.
The filmmakers believe that while the narrative is distinctly Irish, its universal themes resonate with audiences globally. They shared that the film has been well-received in screenings held in the UK and Canada, indicating a broader appeal beyond its immediate context.
Saipan is set to premiere in cinemas on December 26, 2023, inviting audiences to engage with an important moment in football history that still evokes strong emotions today.
