These areas, though urban, lack a pharmacy within a mile or a 20-minute walk.

The applicant proposing the Halls Road pharmacy intends to operate six days a week, with a half-day closure on Saturdays. However, they have yet to secure a property for the new location, pending the council’s decision. This site is situated adjacent to the boundary of West Berkshire and Reading, adding another layer of complexity to the application.

Community Concerns and Recommendations

Local ward councillors have expressed concerns regarding the Halls Road application. They assert that the site is technically located in Tilehurst rather than Calcot, contradicting the applicant’s assertion. Additionally, they note that there are several existing pharmacies within a short distance of the Halls Road location, including Triangle Pharmacy, Medway Pharmacy, Asda Pharmacy, Southcote Pharmacy, and Kamson’s Pharmacy.

The councillors further argue that the Halls Road site, positioned at the top of Langley Hill, may not be convenient for residents of Calcot and Fords Farm. They have highlighted parking issues at this location, which is shared with three other businesses, potentially complicating access for customers.

In contrast, while there are also recognized parking challenges at the Royal Avenue site, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times, it is viewed more favorably. The council officers believe that the Royal Avenue pharmacy would better serve the needs of local residents, thereby making it the recommended option.

The Health and Wellbeing Board is a statutory consultee for any new pharmacy applications within West Berkshire. Their input will be considered alongside the council’s assessment as the final decision approaches.
