Experts Advise Against Home Remedies for New Covid Stratus Variant
A leading health expert has advised individuals suffering from Covid-19 to reconsider the use of popular home remedies when treating symptoms associated with the new Covid Stratus variant. The recommendation comes amid rising case numbers in the United Kingdom, where Stratus has become the predominant strain.
Covid Stratus, identified in January 2025, consists of two sub-variants, XFG and XFG.3, and accounts for approximately 63 percent of current Covid cases in the UK. Another variant, Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), continues to circulate, responsible for about 25 percent of cases. Dr. Sara Kayat discussed the situation on a recent episode of “This Morning,” noting that respiratory illnesses tend to increase during this time of year.
Dr. Kayat highlighted two significant symptoms associated with Stratus: a hoarse voice and severe throat pain, often described as a “razor blade type of sharp throat.” Additional symptoms may include headaches, coughing, and nasal congestion. Many individuals experiencing these symptoms may instinctively reach for a hot drink with honey, believing it will provide relief.
Despite its popularity, experts warn that honey and lemon may not be effective in alleviating these specific symptoms. According to Sandra Rojas, a speech pathologist and specialist in voice disorders, there is no scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of home remedies like honey and saltwater gargles for conditions similar to laryngitis. Rojas stated, “While they might temporarily alleviate some pain, they will not reduce the hoarseness or breathiness of your voice.”
Instead, Rojas recommends the use of a humidifier as a more scientifically supported solution. A humidifier can help keep vocal cords hydrated, potentially reducing hoarseness. Rojas explained, “The tiny water droplets in humidified air are inhaled directly, allowing them to contact the vocal folds more effectively than liquids consumed.”
Current data indicates that the severity of illness caused by Stratus and Nimbus does not differ significantly from other circulating Covid strains. Vaccines remain effective in preventing severe disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reiterated the importance of vaccination, stating, “It’s normal for viruses to mutate and change. As more data becomes available on these variants, we will better understand their interaction with our immune systems and how to optimize protection.”
For those eligible, obtaining the vaccine remains a crucial step in safeguarding against severe illness. As the situation evolves, public health experts continue to monitor the impact of these variants while encouraging individuals to stay informed and take appropriate health precautions.
