Family’s Holiday Turns to Heartbreak After Boy, 3, Diagnosed with Leukaemia

A family holiday in Morecambe turned devastating for the Daly family from Washington, Sunderland, when they discovered that their three-year-old son, Charlie, had been diagnosed with leukaemia. The alarming change in Charlie’s behaviour prompted his parents to seek medical attention, leading to the life-altering diagnosis.
While on holiday, Charlie exhibited signs of withdrawal, which included an unusual lack of energy and the appearance of bruises on his skin. Just a week prior, he had experienced a fever, and although a doctor had initially assessed him for a possible infection linked to a hereditary heart murmur, his condition seemed manageable at that time.
Concerned for their son’s well-being, the family decided to take Charlie to a local hospital in Morecambe. Medical staff quickly suspected a more serious condition, leading to a referral for further testing at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
Kerry Daly, Charlie’s aunt, shared the family’s harrowing experience with the local media. “Charlie has five siblings, and the little ones were all dancing as they normally do,” she explained. “He’s usually the first one on the dancefloor, but he wasn’t himself.”
After arriving at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, doctors conducted blood tests that confirmed the initial suspicions of leukaemia. “It’s been incredibly frightening for them all,” Kerry stated. “Before this, there had been absolutely no indication that it could be cancer. It’s been a bolt from the blue.”
The diagnosis has not only been emotionally taxing but has also posed significant logistical challenges for the Daly family. Both Dawn and Darren Daly, Charlie’s parents, are self-employed and now face financial constraints as they care for their son during this critical time.
In light of the situation, Kerry has initiated a crowdfunding campaign to provide financial support for the family. “At only three years old, this is devastating news for us all as a family, but no one more than his mum, dad, and siblings: Sophie, Oliver, Lexi, Josh, and Melissa,” she wrote on the fundraising page.
The family is optimistic about Charlie’s future, yet they understand that the road ahead will be arduous. Kerry noted, “We are really hopeful that Charlie will make a full recovery, but we have been told he will need 2-3 years of gruelling treatment that could make him very poorly.”
With the community rallying around them, the Daly family hopes to navigate this challenging chapter with the love and support of their friends and neighbours. Charlie’s story serves as a poignant reminder of both the fragility of health and the strength of family bonds during trying times.
For those wishing to contribute to Charlie’s treatment and support his family, the crowdfunding page can be accessed online.
