Flu and Covid Vaccines Launched in Leeds for Eligible Residents
The NHS in West Yorkshire has initiated the rollout of flu and Covid-19 vaccines for all eligible individuals, aligning with a nationwide vaccination campaign. This effort commenced in early September 2023, with vaccination teams administering flu vaccines to pregnant women and children at GP practices, maternity services, and schools.
Flu vaccines are now accessible to several key groups, including:
– All individuals aged 65 and over
– People under 65 who are in clinical risk groups
– Residents and staff of care homes
– Close contacts of immunosuppressed individuals
– Frontline health and social care workers
In addition to flu vaccinations, the NHS is also providing Covid-19 vaccinations. According to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), these are available to adults aged 75 and over, residents of older adult care homes, and individuals who are immunosuppressed.
Dr. James Thomas, Medical Director at NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, emphasized the importance of vaccinations, stating, “Vaccinations are our most effective defence against these viruses and can save lives. We strongly encourage everyone who is eligible to get their vaccinations as soon as possible.” He added that with appointments now easier to book, individuals can help safeguard their health this winter.
The NHS has begun sending out invitations for vaccinations via email, with further notifications expected through the NHS App, text messages, and letters throughout October 2023. Importantly, eligible individuals do not need to wait for an invitation; they can book appointments immediately. Options for scheduling include the NHS App, local GP practices, and online platforms at www.nhs.uk/bookflu or www.nhs.uk/bookcovid. Appointments can also be arranged by calling 119.
Community pharmacies, GP practices, and local clinics are participating in this initiative, making it more convenient for residents to receive their vaccinations. For pregnant women, the vaccine may also be available through maternity services, further ensuring that those most at risk have access to essential healthcare.
As the flu and Covid-19 seasons approach, the NHS encourages eligible individuals in Leeds to take advantage of these vaccination opportunities to protect themselves and their communities.
