Is Pilates Losing Its Accessibility? Instructors Weigh In
The rising popularity of Pilates classes has sparked a debate about accessibility and inclusivity in the practice. As various studios across London charge between £30 and £110 per session, many enthusiasts question whether Pilates is becoming elitist. This issue is further compounded by social media portrayals that often emphasize a narrow, idealized body image. To gain insights into this growing concern, five prominent Pilates instructors shared their perspectives.
Historically, Pilates has been lauded for its rehabilitative benefits, catering to a diverse range of bodies and abilities. Yet, according to Pilates instructor Sabrina Kelly from MoreYoga, the current trend veers toward exclusivity. She highlights that social media promotes a specific aesthetic — often depicting a slim, young, and affluent demographic — which alienates a significant portion of potential participants.
The financial aspect also plays a crucial role in this narrative. Claire Pestaille, the Reformer Manager at HOME Wellness, points out that the costs associated with becoming a certified instructor are high, with comprehensive training often exceeding £4,700. As a result, these costs can lead to higher class fees, making Pilates less accessible to many individuals.
In December 2022, a YouGov survey revealed that 10% of adults in the UK considered cancelling their gym memberships due to rising living costs. These findings underscore the pressing challenge of affordability in fitness, with a Health and Fitness Association study indicating that a mere 10% reduction in exercise costs could encourage approximately 14% of non-members to join structured fitness programs.
Are Studios Focusing on the Right Audience?
While some instructors assert that the current pricing structures are justified, others express concern about the implications of such costs. Luke Meessmann, founder of Absolute Studios, acknowledges that although premium-priced studios exist, there are also many affordable options available. He emphasizes the variety of choices offered by platforms like ClassPass and larger gym chains, which can cater to different budgets.
Conversely, Kelly and Pestaille argue that the perception of exclusivity is not unfounded. Kelly notes that the celebrity-driven boom in Pilates has led to an environment that prioritizes aesthetics over inclusivity. Pestaille highlights the systemic issues inherent in the industry, where the financial burden of training and studio overheads ultimately impacts class pricing.
Some instructors, like Claire Mills, founder of Core LDN, believe that higher price points can be justified when classes involve specialized knowledge from physiotherapists or pelvic health experts. She asserts that quality education and training can warrant higher fees, although this does not necessarily correlate with the best experience.
The Impact of Social Media on Perception
Beyond financial barriers, the portrayal of the “ideal” Pilates body poses significant challenges for inclusivity. The hashtag #PilatesBody has garnered over 38 million views on TikTok, often showcasing individuals with traditional, ballet-inspired physiques. Sadie Straw, a Pilates instructor, articulates concerns about how these images can alienate individuals who do not fit this narrow mold.
All instructors agreed that the focus on aesthetics can be detrimental. Pestaille emphasized that a true “Pilates body” is not defined by appearance but rather by the movement and overall health it promotes. Mills echoed this sentiment, stating that a Pilates body should empower individuals rather than intimidate them.
Research indicates that fitness imagery often excludes larger bodies, older women, and women of color. A 2025 report found that 37% of young people felt that social media negatively impacted their self-esteem, making them hesitant to explore new forms of exercise. This highlights the need for greater representation within the Pilates community.
In response to these challenges, instructors like Kelly are working to create more inclusive environments. She emphasizes the importance of diversity in teacher training programs, advocating for a new generation of instructors that reflects a broader spectrum of society.
Finding a Path Forward for Pilates
The future of Pilates appears to be at a pivotal juncture. The glossy, luxury image that has emerged risks alienating many potential participants, while the surge in interest provides an opportunity to foster inclusivity. Pestaille envisions Pilates becoming more integrated into schools, community centers, and retirement homes, making it accessible to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
Straw advocates for affordable mat classes to help people experience the benefits of Pilates firsthand. As more individuals witness improvements in posture, strength, and overall well-being, they may begin to see Pilates as a viable option for enhancing their lives.
Ultimately, the consensus among instructors is clear: Pilates should focus on wellness and empowerment rather than aesthetics. As Mills succinctly puts it, “It’s a practice that can transform body and mind – if we move away from the filters and back to the foundations.” For everyday individuals juggling various responsibilities, this is the version of Pilates that deserves their investment.
