Mamma Mia! Musical Hits Belfast with Tickets on Sale Soon
The beloved musical Mamma Mia! is set to arrive in Belfast as part of its extensive international tour, celebrating its 27th anniversary. The show will take the stage at the SSE Arena from September 9-12, 2026, bringing the enchanting story of a mother, daughter, and three potential fathers to life with the timeless music of ABBA.
Originally conceived by producer Judy Craymer, Mamma Mia! has captivated audiences worldwide. The production blends ABBA’s classic songs with a lighthearted narrative set on a picturesque Greek island, making it a heartwarming experience for theatre-goers. Over the years, the musical has gained immense popularity, having been performed in more than 42 countries and seen by over 11 million people.
As it marks this significant milestone, the musical has achieved remarkable success, including over 10,000 performances in London’s West End. Additionally, it holds the record as the ninth longest-running show in Broadway history, where it delighted audiences for a remarkable 14 years before returning to the Broadway stage this summer at the Winter Garden Theatre.
The impact of Mamma Mia! extends beyond the theatre, with the film adaptations further solidifying its legacy. The first film, released in 2008, became the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time. Its sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which debuted in July 2018, achieved similar success as the most profitable live musical movie sequel to date. Both films featured a star-studded cast, including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, and Christine Baranski, among others.
The musical features the creative talents of Catherine Johnson, who wrote the book, with direction by Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. The production’s design is crafted by Mark Thompson, while lighting and sound design were developed by Howard Harrison and Andrew Bruce, respectively.
Tickets for the Belfast performances will be available for purchase starting at 10:00 AM on October 3, 2023, through www.ticketmaster.ie. Further details regarding casting will be announced closer to the performance dates.
