Mother Discovers Pregnancy After £9,500 Tummy Tuck in Swansea

A 42-year-old mother, Gemma Williams, underwent a £9,500 tummy tuck without realizing she was pregnant. The procedure, which she hoped would improve her self-esteem after having three children, took place at a private hospital in Swansea on August 15, 2024. Despite a negative pregnancy test prior to the surgery, Gemma later discovered she was 21 weeks along after experiencing persistent symptoms.

Gemma, who has three children aged 14, 17, and 20, had long felt insecure about the appearance of her abdomen. After saving for the surgery, she sought a reputable clinic to provide the procedure that flattens and tightens the abdomen. Prior to the surgery, medical staff conducted a urine test that, according to Gemma, did not reveal any issues.

Following the four-hour operation, she returned home to recover, attributing her subsequent symptoms of bloating and nausea to the effects of the tummy tuck. It was not until December 2024, while working her first shift as a newly qualified nurse at Singleton Hospital, that a colleague suggested she might be pregnant. This prompted Gemma to take a pregnancy test, leading to her shock when it returned positive.

A subsequent ultrasound confirmed she was 21 weeks pregnant. Gemma suspects the urine test before her surgery failed to detect the pregnancy due to low levels of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG), a hormone that rises during pregnancy. She said, “It’s very likely the urine sample I took before my tummy tuck didn’t pick up on the pregnancy because my HCG levels were too low.”

Despite considering her options regarding the unexpected pregnancy, Gemma ultimately chose to keep the baby. Her son was born on May 2, 2025, weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces. Reflecting on her experience, she noted the challenges she faced. “Looking back, I can’t believe it. It’s been turbulent. I never expected to have another child, let alone not know for 21 weeks,” she said.

Gemma, who had not been on contraception for three years, expressed gratitude for her healthy newborn. She described her son as “adorable” and noted how he has begun to develop his own personality.
