One in Five UK Toilets Fail Hygiene Standards, New Study Finds

A recent study has revealed that fewer than one in five toilets in the United Kingdom regularly meet national hygiene standards. The research, conducted by hygiene brand Tork, surveyed 1,000 UK adults and highlighted significant concerns regarding the cleanliness and maintenance of washrooms across various venues.
The report found that only 17 percent of washrooms consistently meet the basic hygiene expectations set for public facilities. Many respondents reported encountering unclean toilets or urinals, inadequate supplies such as hand soap and toilet paper, as well as unpleasant spills and odors. This lack of adequate hygiene has led to 23 percent of individuals spending less time at cultural or entertainment venues due to their experiences with restroom facilities.
Impact on Public Spaces and Business Revenue
The survey, which included responses from a total of 11,500 people across 11 different countries, underscores the broader implications of inadequate washroom facilities. According to Olivia Slater from Essity, the manufacturer of Tork products, these issues disproportionately affect individuals with specific physical or cognitive conditions. Slater noted, “When a washroom fails to meet these diverse needs, it directly impacts a business’s reputation and revenue.”
The findings suggest that the consequences of poor washroom maintenance extend beyond mere inconvenience. Up to 15 percent of respondents reported not returning to a cultural or entertainment venue because of negative experiences in their facilities. Additionally, 30 percent indicated they spent less time at such venues, while 17 percent avoided eating and drinking, which are crucial revenue streams for businesses.
The study also revealed that inadequate washroom conditions leave 26 percent of users feeling frustrated and 13 percent experiencing anxiety or stress. Many individuals expressed a desire to avoid touching surfaces in these environments, with 24 percent indicating they would prefer to steer clear of contact altogether, and 11 percent refusing to enter washrooms if they were occupied.
Concerns About Hygiene and Facility Maintenance
Among the most pressing concerns identified in the report were the cleanliness of toilet bowls, cited by 44 percent of respondents, and the availability of hand soap, mentioned by 39 percent. Furthermore, 41 percent of participants expressed worries regarding proper ventilation in washrooms, while a significant number noted overflowing waste bins that were not emptied frequently enough.
Slater emphasized the importance of clean and sanitary facilities, stating, “Clean and sanitary toilets are not just a matter of public health—they’re a reflection of how much an organization values its people and its visitors.” She added that promoting inclusive hygiene is critical, as it ensures everyone has comfortable access to these essential facilities, which are often among the busiest spaces in any establishment.
The findings of this study call for a reassessment of washroom maintenance practices, particularly in public venues where user experience is crucial to overall satisfaction and business success. Investing in proper hygiene measures not only benefits patrons but also enhances the reputation and profitability of organizations.
