Somerset Man Fights Kidney Failure with Epic 200-Mile Cycle Challenge

Tim Blackburn, a 60-year-old from Somerset, faced a life-altering health crisis that began with what he thought was a simple stomach bug. In December 2022, he experienced persistent fatigue and vomiting while trying to enjoy the festive season with his family. However, after weeks of worsening symptoms, his family convinced him to seek medical help, leading to a shocking diagnosis of kidney failure linked to myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
Upon visiting Musgrove Park Hospital in January 2023, Tim received the urgent news that he was critically ill. Medical staff quickly identified that his kidney failure was caused by myeloma, which originates in the bone marrow. He was swiftly transferred to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital for urgent dialysis treatment.
“I felt like I was in a constant hangover,” Tim recalled, reflecting on the rapid escalation of his condition. “I only went to the hospital because my family persuaded me to.” His diagnosis came as a shock, and he faced a challenging journey ahead.
Tim underwent nine months of chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant, which he described as profoundly affecting his life. The treatment caused significant weight loss, loss of strength, and fatigue. “I could barely walk across the room,” he said, recalling the toll the illness took on his body.
As part of his treatment, Tim also attended regular dialysis sessions. Initially, he experienced severe headaches and nausea, often spending the evenings after dialysis feeling unwell. “I would throw up, and then sleep for 12 hours,” he explained.
In October 2023, Tim received the encouraging news that his cancer had entered remission. Although he remains on the kidney transplant waiting list and requires ongoing dialysis three times a week, he expressed gratitude for his current health. “I need monthly tests to monitor that it has not returned,” he noted, emphasizing the ongoing nature of his care.
In a bid to raise awareness and funds for Kidney Research UK, Tim embarked on a remarkable cycling challenge. From August 18 to August 25, 2023, he completed a 200-mile ride across Somerset and Devon, visiting dialysis centres along the route. His initial fundraising goal was £2,040, symbolizing the £5 for each of the 408 dialysis sessions he has undergone since January 2023. To date, he has raised over £6,205, far exceeding his expectations.
“I had a great time and felt a huge sense of satisfaction in what we’ve achieved,” Tim shared. He described the experience as tough yet rewarding, highlighting the support he received from dialysis clinic staff who cheered him on throughout the journey.
Tim’s passion for cycling, which began 15 years ago, played a crucial role in his recovery. After experiencing significant challenges during his treatment, he decided to purchase an electric bike to help him regain his strength and rejoin his cycling group. “I realized I was really missing the social aspect,” he said, reflecting on the camaraderie he found through cycling.
His determination to complete the Tour de Kidney not only showcased his resilience but also served as an inspiration to many. Donations towards Tim’s challenge are still being accepted, contributing to vital research and support for kidney health.
This remarkable journey underscores the importance of seeking timely medical attention and highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those living with chronic illnesses. Tim’s story serves as a reminder to appreciate health and the support of loved ones during difficult times.
