Vet Reveals 10 Warning Signs of Gut Issues in Pets
A recent study has highlighted significant concerns regarding pet gut health, revealing that many owners may struggle to identify when their pets are experiencing digestive issues. According to veterinary adviser at Protexin, Ronan Fitzgerald, there are key signs that every pet owner should monitor to ensure their furry friends remain healthy.
The research, which surveyed 2,000 pet owners, found that only 19 percent feel confident in recognizing symptoms associated with gut problems in their pets. This lack of awareness can have serious implications, as gastrointestinal health plays a critical role in overall well-being.
Protexin, the company that commissioned the study, emphasizes the importance of understanding gut health. A spokesperson stated, “Many people believe they know their pets inside out – including how they feel. But while we may recognize several behaviours or symptoms as being linked to the gut, some aren’t as clear.” For instance, excessive lip-licking can indicate underlying intestinal issues.
Recognizing the Warning Signs
Fitzgerald outlined several indicators of potential gut problems that pet owners should be vigilant about. These include:
– Lip licking
– Adopting a prayer-like stance (front legs extended, chest on the ground, and backside in the air)
– Drooling
– Reluctance to jump onto furniture
– Vomiting or nausea
– Discomfort during belly rubs
– Gulping
– Excessive flatulence
– Diarrhoea
– Blood in their stools
These signs may suggest that a pet is experiencing abdominal discomfort or digestive distress. For example, if a pet frequently holds its tail in the air or pushes away its food bowl, it may warrant a visit to the veterinarian.
Despite the potential signs of digestive problems, the research revealed that only a quarter of pet owners actively monitor their pet’s digestive health on a daily basis. Alarmingly, 34 percent of dogs and cats exhibit some signs of digestive issues at least a few times a year. Consequently, 59 percent of owners have altered their pet’s diet after observing digestive problems, while 53 percent sought veterinary assistance for these issues.
Taking Action for Better Health
The average pet owner spends approximately £426 annually to maintain their pet’s health, according to data from OnePoll.com. Fitzgerald advises that pet owners should take proactive measures if they notice signs of digestive discomfort. Keeping a record of symptoms can help identify patterns, such as whether issues arise around mealtimes or after outdoor activities.
“If your pet has a stomach upset for a day or two, it may be due to something they ingested while out on a walk,” Fitzgerald noted. “However, if digestive problems persist or worsen quickly, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian for a comprehensive examination. They can suggest dietary changes or the introduction of gut-health supplements.”
Understanding the signs of gut issues in pets is crucial for their overall health. By being vigilant and informed, pet owners can take timely actions to ensure their companions remain healthy and happy.
