Wales to Launch Chickenpox Vaccination Programme in 2026

A new vaccination programme for chickenpox will begin in Wales from January 2026, according to the Welsh Government. This initiative aims to add varicella, commonly known as chickenpox, to the routine childhood immunisation schedule. The disease, caused by the varicella zoster virus, is highly contagious and primarily affects children. While most cases are mild, serious complications can arise, including bacterial skin infections, encephalitis, and pneumonitis, which may lead to hospitalisation and, in rare instances, death.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) recommended in November 2023 that a universal varicella vaccination be included in the childhood immunisation programme. The committee advised administering the vaccine in two doses at 12 and 18 months of age, using the combined MMRV jab, which protects against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.

Jeremy Miles MS, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, has confirmed that he supports the JCVI’s recommendation. The vaccination programme will also incorporate a catch-up initiative for children up to the age of six, ensuring that immunity gaps do not persist among younger populations.

NHS Wales is currently finalising the rollout plan for this new vaccination, which will coincide with broader changes to the childhood immunisation schedule. An additional vaccination appointment will be introduced at 18 months starting in January 2026.

Mr. Miles expressed confidence that this programme will significantly reduce the incidence of chickenpox and protect children from its severe complications. He also highlighted the added benefit of alleviating some of the pressure on the healthcare system.

This proactive measure reflects a growing recognition of the importance of vaccinations in safeguarding public health and preventing infectious diseases. The Welsh Government’s decision underscores a commitment to enhancing the wellbeing of children across the region.
