Woman Suffers Severe Burns During Hair Dyeing, Faces Permanent Damage

An 18-year-old woman from Statesville, North Carolina, experienced severe chemical burns while undergoing a hair dye treatment that left her with a significant bald patch. Kyrie visited a hair salon hoping to lighten her hair to blonde, but the procedure went horribly wrong, resulting in first degree burns and the loss of chunks of her scalp.
Kyrie, who had been dyeing her hair since the age of 14, trusted the stylist due to past experiences. “I decided to go to this hairdresser because she’d cut my hair when I was younger, and she’d been in the business for a while,” she explained. After an hour of treatment involving foils, she felt intense heat and pain. “My entire head felt like it was on fire,” she said. Despite expressing her discomfort, the stylist continued until Kyrie noticed smoke coming from her hair.
Once the procedure was complete, the stylist waived the dyeing fee but still charged Kyrie £37 (approximately $50) for the haircut. Leaving the salon in tears, she sought medical attention after her mother advised her to go to the hospital. Doctors confirmed that Kyrie had suffered first degree burns and later removed an orange-sized patch of dead skin from her scalp.
The Aftermath of a Hair Disaster
Kyrie’s healing journey was lengthy and painful. “The skin took a while to grow back. It took nearly two months just for the wound to close,” she recounted. Despite hopes for recovery, no hair has regrown in the affected area, leading to fears that it may remain permanently bald. “Not one hair follicle has grown since it happened. It was a very heavy thing to walk around with,” she stated.
This incident occurred during a crucial time in Kyrie’s life, as she was preparing for prom and graduation. “I was in so much physical and mental pain. Everyone else was getting excited for college, and I was in and out of hospital,” she shared, reflecting on how the experience affected her senior year. The emotional toll was significant, with Kyrie feeling isolated during a time typically filled with joy.
Despite the severity of the situation, Kyrie noted that the hairstylist did not reach out to her or her family after the incident. “If she had been that stressed, I do think she should’ve reached out. I left her salon in tears,” Kyrie said, underscoring the lack of follow-up from the salon.
A Cautionary Tale
Kyrie’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with hair dye treatments, particularly when performed by inexperienced professionals. The repercussions of such incidents can extend far beyond physical injuries, impacting mental health and self-esteem.
As Kyrie continues to navigate the challenges of recovery, she hopes that sharing her story will raise awareness regarding the need for safety and professionalism in the beauty industry. Her ordeal highlights the importance of thorough research and caution when choosing beauty services, especially those that involve chemical treatments.
