A dedicated ASDA employee in Cumbernauld has marked her 80th birthday with a celebration at her workplace, expressing no intention to retire. Joan McAloon has been a familiar face at the Tryst Road store for 38 years, serving countless customers through her position at the checkout.

Joan, a grandmother of ten, celebrated her milestone birthday last week adorned with a special ‘Birthday Girl’ tiara, a thoughtful gift from her colleagues. She shared her enthusiasm for her job, stating, “I really like my job. Coming in to work and talking to people keeps your mind active, it keeps me young.”

Joan enjoys interacting with customers and finds joy in her daily routines at ASDA. She noted, “Being here all these years, I know a lot of people and I have regular customers who will come to my till. We talk about everything. Our elderly customers like to chat and sometimes I forget that I’m elderly myself!”

Celebration and Community Support

When Joan’s colleagues learned of her birthday, they decorated her till with balloons, creating a festive atmosphere. “The birthday celebration at work was a surprise, but lovely,” she remarked. “Everyone knew, even the customers.”

With a marriage lasting 60 years to her husband, Tommy McAloon, Joan balances her family life with her commitment to her job. As a great-grandmother, she finds that her work helps her feel youthful and connected to the community.

Reflecting on her extensive career, she stated, “I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but the biggest has been technology. I just go with it and learn as I go – you’ve got to, don’t you? My goal is to reach my 40-year mark.”

A Beloved Figure at ASDA

Joan’s colleagues at ASDA describe her as a warm and friendly presence. Jade Gray, the Front End Section Leader, praised her, saying, “Joan is lovely, she’s brilliant. She’s so friendly and colleagues and customers love her. She doesn’t look her age at all.”

Meanwhile, Lynne Morrison, ASDA Cumbernauld Community Champion, extended her birthday wishes, saying, “Happy Birthday to Joan celebrating her 80th birthday. All the best from all your colleagues here at ASDA Cumbernauld!”

Joan McAloon’s story highlights not only her dedication to her work but also the strong sense of community at ASDA Cumbernauld. Her unwavering commitment to her role and her enjoyment of customer interactions illustrate the positive impact of long-term employment in fostering connections both professionally and personally.
