Expert Tips to Clean Your Student Flat and Tackle Germ Zones

Moving into a new student flat can be an exhilarating experience for young adults, marking a significant step towards independence. However, many students often overlook the importance of cleanliness in their new accommodation. With a reputation for untidy living spaces, it’s essential to address the reality of germ zones before unpacking. Experts offer valuable insights on effective cleaning methods to ensure a fresh start in a new home.
Understanding the Importance of a Deep Clean
Before settling into a new student flat, a thorough cleaning is crucial. According to Lexi Brown, Product Manager at True Fresh, preparation is key. While some landlords may provide a professional cleaning service, assuming this is sufficient can lead to disappointments. Brown emphasizes the need for a personal touch, stating, “Before unpacking, start with a deep clean. Use cleaning wipes to clean all surfaces, especially those most likely to be touched, such as light switches, handles, surfaces, and bathroom fixtures.”
Focusing on kitchens and bathrooms is particularly important, as these areas tend to harbor the most germs. Sanitizing countertops, wiping the insides of cupboards, and cleaning sinks before storing food and toiletries can significantly enhance hygiene.
Identifying Hidden Germ Zones
After addressing visible surfaces, students should also consider less obvious areas that require attention. “Checking behind wardrobes, washing machines, beds, and furniture is important, as excess dust may cause allergies,” Brown advises. A swift vacuuming or wipe-down can prevent these issues.
In addition to traditional cleaning products, selecting student-friendly and multi-use items can help manage costs and space. Brown recommends using plant-based cleansers that are both effective and pleasant to use, avoiding harsh chemical smells.
Cleaning expert Alex Rorrison-Leech from Marigold agrees on the necessity of a well-stocked cleaning arsenal. Essential items include triple-layered Extra Life Marigold Kitchen Gloves, an all-purpose cleaner, degreaser, washing-up liquid, microfibre cloths, scrub brushes, and a quality mop. Prioritizing the bathroom and kitchen will ensure these breeding grounds for bacteria are addressed even before unpacking.
Creating a Clean and Organized Space
A tidy flat contributes to a tidy mind, a sentiment echoed by many experts. A clean environment can enhance focus and productivity, especially during the demanding periods of essay writing and exam preparation. Brown suggests establishing a quick cleaning routine of just ten minutes every other day to prevent mess from accumulating.
“Not only does a neat apartment create a good impression, but it also promotes positive mental health and performance, particularly for first-year students who are adjusting to life away from home,” she notes.
Sharing cleaning responsibilities with flatmates can alleviate the burden. Clare Bolland, cleaning expert for Vileda at Freudenberg Home and Cleaning Solutions, highlights the importance of a cleaning rota. “The first deep clean is vital. Regular quick clean-ups of high-use areas like kitchen surfaces can keep disputes and germs at bay,” she explains.
Maintaining cleanliness not only ensures a pleasant living environment but also increases the chances of securing a deposit refund at the end of the tenancy.
In conclusion, preparing a student flat for living involves more than just moving in furniture. Taking the time to clean thoroughly, focusing on high-traffic areas, and creating a routine can lead to a healthier and more enjoyable living experience. With these expert tips, students can transform their new homes into inviting and hygienic spaces, ready for the adventures that lie ahead.
