A primary school that faced significant challenges has successfully transformed its performance, receiving a ‘Good’ rating from inspectors during its latest Ofsted evaluation. Westwood with Iford Primary School, part of the Palladian Academy Trust, was assessed on May 7 and 8, 2025. This achievement marks a notable improvement since the school was placed in special measures four years prior.

The inspectors commended the school for its calm, happy, and safe environment, where students are thriving in a broad curriculum that includes music, outdoor education, and various performance opportunities. The staff received praise for their high expectations, and students were acknowledged for their commendable behavior and positive attitudes.

Head of School Heather Saunders expressed pride in the school’s community, stating, “We are incredibly proud of our school community and this Ofsted outcome. It reflects the dedication and passion of our staff, pupils, and families. We have been on a challenging but hugely rewarding journey of improvement, and I am thrilled that inspectors recognized the strength and warmth of our school.”

Positive Impact on Student Development

Inspectors noted that students are “proud of their school,” demonstrating kindness and respect while participating in enrichment activities such as charity work and community events. The early years provision was also rated ‘Good,’ highlighting the benefits of a language-rich curriculum and robust support from the beginning of a child’s education.

Reading was identified as a particular strength, with pupils becoming confident and fluent readers, supported by strong parental involvement. Simon Futcher, the Executive Headteacher, remarked, “This result is a testament to the hard work of everyone involved at Westwood with Iford. It confirms that our focus on high-quality teaching, inclusive values, and a strong partnership with Fitzmaurice and the Trust has made a real difference. We are excited about the future.”

Commitment to Improvement and Wellbeing

The report also highlighted effective safeguarding practices and the school’s commitment to staff wellbeing and professional development during a significant period of change. School leaders acknowledged that the areas identified for further improvement had already been recognized and addressed prior to the inspection.

Donna Tandy, Chief Executive Officer of the Palladian Academy Trust, expressed her delight in the outcome, stating, “I am delighted for the whole school community that the report recognizes their strengths, the strong leadership, and the excellent and equitable opportunities on offer for the pupils. We are proud to celebrate this report with them and delighted that inspectors noted the positive impact being part of Palladian Academy Trust has on pupils and colleagues.”

The school community has extended its gratitude to students, families, and colleagues across the Trust and looks forward to celebrating this significant achievement with the wider community.
