Inmates at HMP Berwyn Refurbish Bicycles to Support Hospice

Inmates at HMP Berwyn are actively participating in a new rehabilitation initiative that involves refurbishing bicycles to raise funds for Nightingale House Hospice. This project, launched in collaboration with FCC Environment and Wrexham Council, aims to repair donated bicycles, which will then be sold at the Bryn Lane Reuse Shop. All proceeds from these sales will directly benefit the hospice, which provides essential care and support for individuals facing life-limiting illnesses.

The initiative is supported by the Wrexham Shared Prosperity Fund and offers inmates accredited training in bicycle maintenance. Materials needed for the repairs are supplied by Wrexham Council, with additional support from FCC Environment. This scheme not only contributes to charity but also equips prisoners with valuable skills, promotes environmental sustainability through the reuse of bicycles, and provides local residents with affordable transportation options.

Katie Roberts, Head of Retail and Catering at Nightingale House Hospice, expressed her pride in the project, stating, “We’re proud to be part of this innovative project. This partnership not only creates a sustainable bike scheme but also supports rehabilitation and raises vital funds for our services.” Her sentiments reflect the broader commitment to community engagement and support.

The Bryn Lane Reuse Shop, where the refurbished bicycles will be sold, offers a variety of pre-loved goods, including furniture and homeware. Every purchase made at the shop contributes to the hospice’s vital services, which encompass specialist care, emotional support, and practical assistance for patients and their families throughout Wrexham and surrounding areas.
