Julie Robinson, a dedicated foster carer from the Wirral, received the prestigious British Empire Medal from King Charles for her outstanding contributions to foster care. At 58 years old, Robinson has fostered over 20 children in addition to raising her four biological children. Her commitment to fostering spans more than 27 years, demonstrating her profound impact on the lives of many young people.

The award ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace, where Robinson expressed her surprise and gratitude upon receiving the honour. “I was shocked when I found out about it, and it is an honour, but I don’t do this to be recognised for it. I do it because it’s in me,” she stated in a release from Wirral Council on September 23, 2023. She added, “I never dreamed of getting a medal.”

Inspiring Others Through Personal Experience

Throughout her years as a foster carer, Robinson has actively sought to inspire others to consider fostering. She has often shared her experiences in talks, aiming to dispel misconceptions about who can become a foster parent. “I’ve met loads of people who think they couldn’t be a foster carer because of the way they look or talk but it’s just not true,” Robinson remarked.

She recalled a memorable moment when she appeared on camera for an event while dressed casually. “I turned up with my hair in a scruffy bun, in my gym stuff and my sliders – only to find out I was going to be on camera. But you know what, in the end I was glad because that’s me at my most comfortable,” she said. Robinson emphasised the importance of authenticity, stating that being oneself is crucial in fostering.

Robinson believes that the key to successful foster care lies in treating foster children as one would their own. “It’s not about where you’re from, it’s about what you bring to the table. How would you treat a child of your own? That’s how you should treat a foster child,” she explained.

Lasting Connections and Community Engagement

Robinson has built long-lasting relationships with many of the children she has fostered. Some of her long-term placements have become integral parts of her life. “One of my lads has been with me since he was a teenager – he’s 32 now and still lives with me. Some of the others moved out when they were 18, but still visit me multiple times a week,” she shared.

She highlighted the joy these relationships bring, mentioning the activities they enjoy together, such as holidays, bowling, and community events. “We hold street parties and bring everyone together. I love it, it gives me a lot of joy. It’s also the difference you make in a child’s life – that’s the real reward,” Robinson said.

In a video released by the Cheshire and Merseyside partnership Foster4, she noted the positive transformations she witnesses in the children she cares for. “It’s just lovely seeing how they change from when they come to where they are now. They’ve got a safe environment. They’ve got a home. Someone that cares for them, someone that loves them, and it’s the love you get back off those children,” she stated.

Robinson encourages prospective foster carers to commit wholeheartedly to the process, emphasising the importance of partner support. “You’ve really got to make sure your mind is made up to do it and if you’ve got a partner, they’ve got to be on board. But if you really want to do it, I’ll help you do it. Believe me once you start that ball rolling, you will carry on. Go for it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life,” she affirmed.

The significance of fostering is further underscored by the financial implications for local authorities. Children’s social care comprises a substantial portion of the Wirral Council budget. This year, the department is projected to be £1 million under budget, primarily due to a decrease in demand for children’s residential placements. The council has been actively promoting its foster carer service, which is considerably more cost-effective than residential arrangements.

Robinson’s story exemplifies the profound impact foster carers can have on their communities and the lives of children in need. Her recognition by King Charles not only highlights her personal achievements but also shines a light on the importance of foster care as a vital service in society.
