New Fund Established to Honor Victim of Manchester Arena Attack

A new music access fund has been established in memory of Eilidh MacLeod, a victim of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing. The Eilidh MacLeod Access Fund will be managed by the National Piping Centre and aims to support young pipers and drummers seeking to develop their musical skills. Eilidh, who hailed from the Isle of Barra, was just 14 years old when her life was tragically cut short in the attack.

Eilidh’s Trust, created in her memory, is a music education charity that reflects her deep passion for music. Eilidh was an active member of her local pipe band and participated in competitions across the country. She also played with the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland, which operates under the auspices of the National Piping Centre.

Supporting Young Musicians

The access fund will provide £2,000 annually and is open to applications from individuals aged under 25, whether they are new to music or already participating in ensembles. Since its establishment in 2018, Eilidh’s Trust has awarded over £100,000 to young musicians and musical groups throughout the UK, including pipe bands, choirs, pianists, and brass bands.

Iagan MacNeil, a representative of the trust, emphasized the importance of making music education accessible. He stated, “We are committed to making music learning as accessible as possible for all, and we understand that financial barriers often prevent young people from embarking on their musical journey or cause them to drop out.”

By collaborating with the National Piping Centre, the trust aims to fulfill its mission of providing opportunities for young musicians. MacNeil highlighted the broader benefits of learning an instrument, noting that it fosters not only musical skills but also social connections and team-building abilities.
