New Pub Crooked Crown Opens in Liverpool, But Loses Old Charm

A familiar venue has undergone a significant transformation in Liverpool’s city centre. The Crooked Crown pub has opened its doors, replacing the once-beloved Seel’s Street Peacock, which was known for its vibrant atmosphere and student-friendly offerings. The makeover has attracted attention for its stunning design, yet it has also sparked nostalgia among former patrons who cherished the original venue’s unique character.
The Crooked Crown is the latest addition to the Pub Invest Group’s portfolio, joining the ranks of Temple Tavern in the Cavern Quarter. The new establishment promises to deliver “the look and feel of a classic pub,” featuring cask ales on tap, live sports broadcasts, and inviting spaces for patrons to relax. However, many former fans of the Peacock feel the new design has erased the spirited essence that made the original venue special.
The Peacock was a hotspot for students, offering multiple floors of music, a popular balcony overlooking the courtyard, and budget-friendly drink promotions like Skint Tuesdays. Its eye-catching red neon sign was a beacon for night owls, while the interior boasted an eclectic mix of decor, from wall tattoos to disco balls. The lively chaos reflected the energy of its clientele, making it a memorable spot for many.
Change was anticipated given the Peacock’s lack of updates over the last decade, but the overhaul has left some disappointed. Upon visiting Crooked Crown, I ordered a cold pint of Birra Moretti and took in the new surroundings. The venue was almost empty during the early afternoon, allowing me to appreciate the meticulous design without distraction.
Crooked Crown features an appealing aesthetic reminiscent of a country saloon, with wood paneling that reaches the ceiling, hanging iron and glass lights, and exposed brickwork that adds an industrial flair. Natural light floods the space through nearly floor-to-ceiling windows, enhancing the inviting atmosphere. Decorative items, including photo frames and shelves filled with books, dot the walls, while a large open fire and a television broadcasting live sports create a cozy ambiance.
While the Crooked Crown impresses with its visual appeal, it bears striking similarities to its sister venue, Temple Tavern. Despite the absence of Temple Tavern’s crimson paint, the two establishments share a common design ethos that may leave some patrons wanting more variety.
While the aesthetic merits of the Crooked Crown are undeniable, the transition from a vibrant cocktail bar to yet another traditional pub raises questions about the evolving character of Liverpool’s nightlife. The city already hosts a multitude of classic pubs, and the replacement of the Peacock with a similar concept feels like a missed opportunity for something more distinct.
Crooked Crown management has indicated plans to maintain student nights to attract younger crowds, a nod to the loyal patrons of the Peacock. Yet, the question remains whether the new venue can capture the spirit and energy that defined its predecessor.
As a standalone establishment, Crooked Crown is undoubtedly impressive. However, the loss of the lively environment that once characterized the Peacock leaves a bittersweet feeling for those who frequented it. The change signifies a shift in the city’s bar scene, where patrons may find themselves longing for the vibrant atmosphere that has been replaced by a more conventional pub experience.
